What are your favorite food indulgences here in San Antonio? We recently moved here, and with my two babies, I'm a little delayed in finding the "best of" type dives in San Antonio. Food can really make you love a city and I know San Antonio has lots of great food. I'm looking for your advice on great food finds. I would like specifics. Not everything is good at every restaurant. Here are a couple so far that have turned out to be great advice...
Best Burgers - Chris Madrid's (Cheddar Cheesy), Best Crispy Tacos - ChaCha's in the medical center, Best NY Style Pizza - Florio's, Best Sandwiches (Italian Roast Beef is awesome!) - Zito's

I'm interested in anything you've got - best gyro's, best chopped beef sandwich, best birthday cakes, best patio dining, best earth mama / vegetarian type food, best shakes, best fried catfish, best french fries, best chinese, best sushi, really anything. I'm excited to try them all!

Thank you, mamas!

First welcome to San Antonio. I have to agree with you on the Zito's sandwiches, theirs are wonderful but they aren't open except until 4:00 which is sad. There are so many wonderful places to eat in San Antonio. An old favorite is Tip Top on Fredericksburg Road. Some of those waitress have been there over 30 years or more. They are known for their chicken fried steak but I have to say I don't think theirs is the best in town by far, however their enchilidas are great and they have great pies. I also heard their shrimp is great but I have yet in all these years tried it. You got to eat Shrimp Pisaeno's at Pisaneno's. They are in Lincoln Heights as well as downtown. Have been in San Antonio since 1968 and that dish is the best though you can get versions at some other places like Milano's on Wurbach and Lock Hill - Selma. We found this great bar-b-que place at Encino Rio and Bulverde called Smokey Mo's. Try Longhorn Cafe for burgers and such. One on Blanco and 1604 and one out IH10 exit Leon Springs and do the turn around it will be on the right. Blanco Cafe - have been around forever. Their original place is down from Chris Madrid's on Blanco but they also have one at Blanco and 1604 inside 1604 and another one at Blanco and Oblate. Jacala's Mexican food is good and they again are family owned and operated and have been around forever. Supposedly they invented the puffy taco from what they say. Brown's is also known for their enchiladas and they are on the westside. Of course there is always Mi Tiera's etc. in Market square but very tourist. Good Luck and just try them all - there are many and great food.

Best chopped beef is a tie. Try Dickey's BBQ or MO's BBQ on Bulverde Road at Evans. Chopped beef is kind of spicy. Dickey's has several locations. There Turkey will melt in your mouth and so will the chopped beef. Dickey's is a must

PF Chang in the Quarry or Taipie on NW Military for Chinese

Stoneworks is my favorite spot for dinning. Everything is great.

Romantic dining Crumpets or Cappy's

I'm definitely saving this one to my files. I know there's some great advice here.

I have to add the Gourmet Burger Grill to the top burgers in San Antonio. They're relatively new in the Legacy Shopping Center at 281/1604. Chef Mike makes the best burgers... they literally melt in your mouth. His prices are higher but worth every penny. The daily combos are a great bargain and on Wednesdays kids eat free. Sign up for his weekly email. I literally plan my week of eating out around his menu. Don't forget to try his sweet potato fries too.

The other thing I must recommend is the fried pickles at Willie's. They have three restaurants: 281 at Thousand Oaks, 1604/NW Military and 10/Leon Springs. The atmosphere is laid back and there is a sand box at each location for the kids.

Best Tortillas: Alamo Cafe (try the tortilla soup too)
Best Burrito/Enchilada: Chuy's (fave is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom version)

Happy eating... you'll find some of the best food in San Antonio if you just look for it.

The best cakes come from Lucy's bakery. When I was taste testing for my wedding, theirs was the most moist and most reasonably priced. Best sushi is Sushi Zushi, but it's a little pricey as you know sushi con be. Last time I ate at ChaCha's, there was a dead roach on the floor next to the table that we didn't discover until after we ate. Chris Madrid's tastes like Whataburger, and I think Whataburger is cheaper, not saying that either are really something to write home about. Chris Madrid's has just been around a while, so it has that gossip effect, if you know what I mean. Best Chinese is probably PF Changs. A chain, but good. Pei Wei is owned by PF Changs and is also good. Never eaten at Florio's or Zito's, so let me know how it turns out. Luce, at Huebner Oaks, is probably the most authentic Italian and my husband is from Italy. It's a little pricey though.

I'm from Houston and there are great places to eat there, so as you can tell I'm a little disappointed w/ SA food, but good luck to you and happy eating.

Welcome to San Antonio! Our favorites are Cheesy Jane's (my sons' favorite...milkshakes), Jason's Deli (number one for organics) and Mina and Dimi's (the most awesome Greek food). Hope you will give them a try...especially Mina and Dimi's. Their service is just as awesome as their food. Happy eating!
