I bought mine from Costco. The process was very simple, and really, really cheap- under $10 for two boxes, I think?
I'm running very low on checks so I went to reorder them. I have gotten mine from a place called Artistic Checks because they had a design I was in love with (something I collect) and the price was pretty good. They have discontinued the design and I think they have gone up quite a bit in price since I last ordered any.
I don't use a whole lot of checks as a lot of our bills are autopay but I do have a few that won't let you autopay and we use them at Costco because we've sometimes run into our debit card being denied because it's a large amount, even though the money is there, just because it's a large transaction.
So, short story, I can't go without checks entirely.
I remember the bank charging a huge amount for checks which is why I never get them through my bank.
So, after that long story. Where do you buy your checks from? And how much are they?
The credit union we bank with does not have free checks and even the most boring basic ones cost more than the cute designs from outside companies so that's why I've been getting them for years.
I just looked at Costco. We have the Executive membership. The prices are fantastic and they have some great ones to choose from! They're half the price Artistic Checks wanted! I didn't realize they had personal checks, I thought they only had business ones. Thanks everyone!

I had to go look - apparently I get them from Checks Unlimited. I don't remember how much, but it can't be that much if it made this little of an impression on me.
Costco has great prices, even better if you are an executive member. We have gotten check from them for years. I think I paid about $12 for two boxes the last time I ordered.
Checks Unlimited or Check Works - you can probably find a coupon code online for your 1st order
I don't recall the cost, but it was much cheaper than through our bank
Hi! I get mine from Costco. I used to get pretty checks but now I write so few that I just buy their cheapest ones.
walmart.com
very affordable, lots of cute designs. never had a single problem with them. can't remember how much but they're easy to look up.
Free from our bank. Very plain but free. I don't ever recall my bank (and it's been through a lot of owners and names etc.) "charging a huge amount for checks." Save yourself some money and ask your bank what types of accounts get free checks now. It's personal preference but I have never had or wanted checks with designs -- seems like a cost I can avoid.
I always use Artistic and/or Checks Unlimited. But, I am like you have haven't needed to buy any in a couple of years. I was just thinking I need some soon....I guess I'll keep watching your post and get ideas too. I had no idea you could buy them at Costco and Walmart!
If you order the generic basic check, even if from a bank, it does not cost a lot.
I go through my bank.
I do not trust, other vendors.
Checks Unlimited or Checks In The Mail. I like cute checks and their prices aren't too bad. Good luck!
I get them from my local credit union where I keep my checking account. Because I have automatic deposit, I get free checks, otherwise I'd pay $5 a box.
I used to go through places like Artistic Checks and the like, but I had someone hack my account, and it was finally traced back to where I was getting my checks. Places like Artistic Checks aren't very secure, and have multiple people handling your sensitive information. I just don't trust them anymore.
I would rather pay a bit more for security and go through the credit union (or bank), than go for cutsie designs from some circular that comes in the mail.
Good luck in what you decide.
I don't like going without checks either, I was probably born in the wrong era, but I prefer doing a lot of things the "old fashioned way" - I pay all my bills either by mail or in person ha, checks still DO come in handy. I order mine through Current...my mom has ordered hers through them as long as I can remember, and I just kind of followed in her footsteps, they're obviously legit and have a ton of cute designs.
I pick them out at the bank then order them there when I get low. It's just so much easier.
I get basic checks (not into designs, etc) for personal use and they are free from my bank.
I order my business checks from Intuit and a box of checks and envelops run about $200 BUT it is business checks (voucher form that I put in the printer) and about 300 at a time.
Check Gallery - recycled paper, soy ink, and certain designs, a part of the price of purchase goes to a worthy cause such as animal rescue or cancer research.
My bank give basic design checks for free.
I get mine free, from my bank.
Of course they are just plain and boring but I really don't care at this point. I stopped spending money on "cute" checks when I was like 22.
I don't want to pay much for checks either. I got mine at http://www.walmartchecks.com/ Prices start at $5-something per box.
i've got the cutest checks! and hardly anybody sees 'em any more.
checks unlimited. still more than my cheap self likes to pay, but WAY better than what the bank charges.

I buy them thru my bank they are $7.00 and I order them once every two years.
One little perk about crossing certain milestones - I get free checks from my "new" bank (2 boxes a year)!! They're a more local bank, so not an option for you in CA - but looks like you ran into a good deal unexpectedly, too!
My bank provides checks for free.
I get them FREE from the bank - I thought everyone did!! They're really plain, but who cares? I didn't know some banks charged for checks. Maybe you just need to ask for the free ones?
How many checks do you use? Can you opt for bill pay through your bank? That's practically free.
Like Jill K., I get mine at Wal-Mart online. Pretty darn cheap.
I bank with USAA - my plain checks are free. I don't use them that often. A box will last me about 2 years!!
I know Costco sells checks.
And http://Identitychecks.com is where my husband gets the checks he likes.
