Ewww. Tampon please. It's just not very appealing and she would be SO embarrassed if she got out of the pool with blood on her.

no, your period doesn't STOP AT ALL when you're in water, it's just diluted by the water so you don't see it so much.... that's a MAJOR public health risk to allow your blood or your child's blood into a body of water that others are swimming in - that's just plain disgusting. and that's a big NO - myself and my daughter would not be swimming without a tampon...

I swim on my period, but I always use the largest super tampon when I do. I would not swim without one or allow my child too, especially in a public setting. Maybe at a lake or ocean I would let them, but the poor kid will still have to worry about blood running down their legs once they're out of the water, so I just think the situation isn't a good one. And actually, I'm scared to swim in the ocean on my period even with a tampon in. Sharks can smell blood from a long ways off. I know it's probably silly but it really scares me.

I was invited to Homecoming dance with a boy and we went to the lake to ride jetskis for our day activity and I was on my period and I had never used a tampon before!! I was mortified, but I knew I better either learn how to use one very quickly or decline the date, even though I had already said yes to going to Homecoming several weeks earlier. So I figured it out and wore a tampon. It was dry when I inserted it and uncomfortable as a result, so maybe KY jelly would have been helpful. But once I learned how to use them it was very nice to have that option as a teen. Make sure you daughter knows how long they can be left in before she needs to take the tampon out and replace it.

Gross, you would get into a pool or allow your child to get into a pool and contaminate the water???

Plus, think about the humiliation of the child when she gets out of the water with bloody swim bottoms?

If you have some aversion to tampons then don't swim.

There are plenty of tampon brands well suited for teens. It would be a good idea if she does start using them just like the majority of her classmates do.

I didn't use tampons as a teen, but I did when I was swimming. Accidents can be so very embarassing, especially for girls this age, and around boys!

I would buy her the Tampax PEARLs because they go in so easy and they make a lite one. I think it comes in the yellow wrapper. I know they can be hard to find, but the regulars are just too big for a young teen who doesn't use them. I would get the applicator kind until she figures it out because trying to get it in the right place without one is so much harder.

I never liked tampons so i wouldn't swim during my period. as a mom i've used tampons and done it for my kids sto be able to go swimming, but i don't like it

do you know you can og to the kotex or always website and they will send you free trial packs so she can experiment with several kinds so see what works best.

I have heard that the blood won't flow when you are swimming... but I have never trusted it. Plus, a lot of the time when I go swimming, I don't swim the whole time... I get out to get a drink, use the restroom, stand in line for the water slide ;), rest, etc. so I would be worried about bleeding during that time.

I would just encourage her to use a tampon during that time. I'm not sure why she does not use tampons, but I would get her to make an exception for swimming... otherwise, she will miss out or run the risk of being absolutely mortified if she DOES bleed on herself...

No, I don't swim on my period. I hate tampons. I wouldn't swim without one if I was on my period. Use a tampon or be excused from the activity.

a period never stopped me from swimming. but i only ever did so using tampons. i don't think i would go au naturel or with a pad. it would be rude to fellow swimmers to bleed into a pool, and risky to do so in the ocean. i suppose if i had a nice private lake i might.

No way this is a serious question, 'does the period just stop'.

Have you EVER been able to simply will your period to stop? If so, you should be a gazillionaire by now.

If you swim during your period without a tampon you are spreading fluids in the pool. Not sure that anyone would notice while you are swimming but if you didn't run to the bathroom quick enough they are probably going to notice a red spot pretty quick.

No the period does not stop, not even sure why you would think that. The blood spreads just when you pee in a pool and in my opinion just as gross.

So if you can't tell I don't think it is fine.

My older daughter started using tampons pretty much after her first period and never looked back. I plan on doing that with the 11 year old when she starts. There are just too many activities they do that wearing tampons make easier or even possible.

Time to learn to use tampons or a diva cup.
Of course blood gets into the water - even with tampons they get soaked and blood seeps.
We're never hermetically sealed.
I suppose people think no one pees in the pool either but they do and we all swim in that too.
All baby diapers do is to keep the poop from floating away - they don't keep the water from flowing through.
We never swim in distilled water - which would be the absolute cleanest you could get.
Swimming pools are a lot closer to cesspools than people like to think about.

I have friends that have totally bought into the myth that your period stops when you are in the bath, any body of water or even the shower! Don't believe it for a minute. Your period keeps on going, pardon the pun, come hell or high water. :)

Tampons or skip the swimming on the heavy flow days. I started using tampons for swimming at 13 or 14 (at summer camp). Pads are a mess and don't work very well. Even if your flow slows down or stops in the water you still are stuck with a mess when you get out.

Unfortunately she cannot stay in the water the whole time so she should learn to use tampons or a cup or refrain from swimming. I had a very embarrassing incident when I was a teen where I got my period on a beach trip. I'm sure you can figure out what happened next. I didn't use tampons much as a teen - never found a brand I liked. But if this is an issue for your DD, take her to the feminine products aisle or just buy small boxes of different brands and let her check them out on her own. My SD likes Playtex Sport and Kotex in the bright sleeves.

NO swimming without a tampon. GROSS! With tampons, I swim all the time. I'm kind of crazy about the no getting in the water at the BEACH when on my period (I'm terrified of sharks, I'm sure it's stupid especially if I have a tampon, but I do.not.care!) but seriously, this question just put me in a bad mood thinking someone might be nasty or stupid enough to get in our neighborhood pool without a tampon with me and my little guys in it.
It gets diluted so you can't see it, it DOES NOT STOP. This is gross to even think about....But if I change a tampon every hour when dry, to be careful I change every 30 minutes if in the pool, just in case (because I don't want to take a chance and be humiliated). Just don't swim as long.
Why would some not wear tampons if needed? I don't understand that? I wore tampons starting at age 12 when I first started.

Blood might not come out while in the water because of the pressure of the water keeping it in, but the minute you get out of the pool it will gush.

My pet peeve is the high schools that force swim time on girls (who are new to all this). It's terrible, I can tell you. Were the teachers ever young?

I could not physically wear tampons until I was about 16. I just couldn't. So I didn't swim if I was on my period. Did it suck? Yes, but it's part of being a girl.

Blood carries all sorts of things. If there was blood on the floor or on a toy, you wouldn't let your child play with it. Why is it OK if there is blood (diluted as it may be in the water) in water that other people are swimming in?

No tampon, no swimming. Common sense - you'll bleed in the pool.

I agree that while she is in the water she is fine, but when she gets out, the flow will begin and she could have a showing..

I would help her find a tampon that will work for her. There are so many choices today.

If i remember correctly, you can mail Tampax or Playtex and ask for a sample box. I do not think they are very expensive.

Being in a very traditional mom/family. I was told not to use tampons. I am now 34 yrs old and I have never used one. Once I get my period- I don't go swimming. Unfortunately, the female body/reproductive system is "specially" made--having our period stop when it connects with water does not happen. I would say, no swimming. If you prefer using tampons..go right ahead-many woman have used them.

My girls and i wear a tampon to swim. They have so many kinds now that are teen friendly. Please dont have her swim without one.

I was on swim and water polo team growing up. I started wearing tampons when I was 14. Also yes, I do wear them when I swim now. I think if you have a light enough flow that it should be ok to swim with out one (not in the ocean though obviously, lol!)
