When to Take My Toddler Out?

B/c my husband and I work full time, our nanny doesn't drive, and it's cold outside, my daughter does not get out much on weekdays. Her only consistent social contact is a 1 hr session at Gymboree weekly.
As a result, on weekends, I try to take her out to diferent places so she can see people. However, her naptime is between 1-3pm. If I take her out during that time, she is cranky and clingy wherever we are, and barely sleeps a wink. But if I wait till her naptime and dinner is done, it's already almost 5pm, and the day has flown by.
My question to other moms with similar experiences is, should I let her take her naps and let the day fly by, or take her out regardless becaause she needs that outside exposure? I know, kinda dumb question but I'm hoping someone can give me opinions...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am so appreciative of all the great responses I have gotten. You are all right, it is important for her to have her naps, and socialization can always come later.

I also agree with you all, that early mornings is good to take her out on errands and stuff. Just this past Sunday, I needed groceries, so after her breakfast I took her there. SHe was so happy to sit in the cart and look at everything and everyone.

thus, I will take her out in the early mornings and the late afternoons. It's best for everyone -- it's no fun with a cranky baby and tired parents!

The best time for us, is in the morning after we have eat breakfast and get all cleaned up, even grocery shopping can be an outing if you let your child help out.

I would make sure that she takes her nap. Sleep is very important at that age. Try to take her out before lunch or in the morning. I don't know where you live, but there are lots of places to go. Jumps and Giggles at the Elk Grove park district, Little Village Play Place in Arlington Heights and Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee has a good play area(I'm sure other malls do too)
Good Luck,

We are out in the morning after breakfast. It is the best time of day for us to get anything done. Then we come home, have lunch and nap. By then the day is gone, like you mentioned. Although, with a good snack when they wake up, by kids can do a late afternoon outing as well.

Good luck!

Hi
After the nap. There are some places that have things in the early mornings. Can your nanny find things in the area that she can get to on the bus. Maybe thats not something you would approve of. But my son loved the bus. He still enjoys people watching and riding the bus now.

Absolutely let her take her naps as needed. There will be plenty of time for socialization later. According to your description, sleep is what she needs the most. Besides, without enough of it, nothing else will go well. Follow her lead. (and your instincts.)
