Hi Ladies,

Edit: [What age do I start cutting the cup out? Is she too young?]
When do I need to move from sippy cup to regular cup and how do I do that without wearing juice & milk with every meal? I bought cups with the straw but she frustrates herself and me because she tips the cup and can't get a drink. I try showing her but she launches into a tantrum when I tip the cup down. She is feeding herself and can drink from a dixi cup if I'm helping her tip slowly. If I let go she dumps the contents on herself. Should I just get a tarp and let it fly?

Thanks for the advice.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice. We go to Early Intervention twice a week and they use cups during snack. The occupational therapist told me to get her to practice using a cup and I wasn't sure how to go from the sippy to the regular cup. I'm not in a hurry. I wasn't sure if sippy cups cause problems if they are used too long and at what age is too long. I wanted to know what you guys have done and you gave me some good advice.

Yes she is too young. Give her a sippy cup until she can manage a cup without a lid by herself.

My duaghter is 27 months and she still has a zippy cup.

She did learn to use a straw- and we have sippy cups with straws that she does well with.

We also took the valve out of the sippy cup when she stopped throwing them off of the highchair tray and turning the cups upside down to watch the milk spill.

You can teach her to drink from a straw with a milk shake.. go buy a milk shake and suck on the straw so the shake is up by the top.. then give it to her. after a coule of times she will get it.

I dont know why you would want to get rid of sippy cups.. they cut down on spills mess and clean up.

A.,

The sippy cup is your best friend. I still have my 4 year old use one occassionaly. That being said, by 2 to 2 1/2 my son was drinking from a cup. I used either dixie cups or gave him a toddler/pre-school size cup with only a little fluid. 20 mos is pretty early.

Why are you in such a hurry to get rid of the sippy cup? My daughter was 3 when we completly gave it up. She was able to use a cup with a lid before then, about 2 1/2,but we had so many spills that we just used a sippy.
Good luck

Maybe you should try the cups with the straws in it, munchkin makes a nice cup where you can buy replaceable straws when they get yucky. I mainly use these when we're out. For at home, I keep the plastic cups with lids from restaurants, and just cut down the straw to make it fit the cup. It makes it easier for them to drink. With my oldest son, I started out by giving him water in a regular cup. I only filled it 1/4 at a time. That way, if it was spilled, it wasn't a lot and it didn't stain.

Okiee at first I was like the other post. Why rush it but then my 3rd child came along and he stays home with dad mostly during the day. His dad at the age of 17 months old taught him to use a regular little cup and now at 22 months he drinks out of any thing he can get his hands on. We barely use a sippy cup any more. We have taught him to leave it at a table. He does pretty good. Its really not a age that u should stop using a sippy cup. It really depends on the child. GOOD LUCK !!
