My son is going to be 8 months old next week. He has been eating cereal and baby food for a few months now, and does great. When should I start other foods and what do you guys suggest to start? He has a couple of teeth, but not too many. Should I start some finger foods now or should I wait until later? Thanks.

Fruit/veggie puffs are great for letting him practice his "pincer grasp" -- using thumb and index finger to pick up small things -- as well as practice picking food up and getting it into his mouth. Graham crackers and Cheerios were also on my kids' list of first finger foods.

Hi J., I think you can start finger foods now. try the fruit puffs and teething biscuits, those are great starters! He may like cheerios and goldfish too, since he has teeth now.

A good rule of thumb is if he can grab it on his own he is ready for finger food. I would start with the baby finger food made to dissolve quickly. I can't remember the name, but they are star shaped and in the baby isle. From there you can move up to Cheerioes. Once he has those mastered, then you can do soft foods (bananas, avacadoes, cheese, etc.). Last, just start dicing up whatever you eat. It depends on the kid on how long this takes.

With both my boys, once they mastered finger foods they only wanted to self feed and didn't want the baby food. They get their nutrients from the formula/breast milk, so don't worry, but I just wanted to warn you.
