When to Start Looking for Part-time Nanny?

We are planning on hiring a part time nanny/babysitter for the next school year that starts this coming August. When should we start looking? We'll likely use care.com or sittercity.com. I am a planner and hate uncertainty, so I would love to start looking sooner rather than later, but I'm guessing now is too soon. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I start looking now for summer. I also use this person during spring break and on date nights to get the kids used to them. When we were looking years ago for our morning sitter, we started looking in late July/early August. Fortunately, we interviewed quite a few people. The one we chose for full-time care was HORRIBLE and she was fired almost immediately. The second one we hired just to do the mornings and she is still with us. She even did last summer for us as well. I need to talk to her, but I do not think she is going to do this summer or next school year, she is 22 and ready to move on.

Anyways, start looking now (we used sittercity.com) and start using that person here and there so everyone gets comfortable.

If you do start now, you can "try" a couple of people out during the summer to see if they are a good fit. This might also be a good idea for a potential nanny to see if she feel like she is a good fit for your family.

You might also try word of mouth to find a nanny... other parents at the school, neighbors, etc. Our neighborhood families use a lot of nannies and it is common to get on our HOA website and Neighborhood Face Book page and see where some families are looking for nannies and some families who no longer need their nanny are looking for another spot for their beloved nanny.

Best wishes!

can't hurt to start looking now, so long as you are aware of the possibility that you'll find the perfect nanny but she wants to start right away.
if you're going through an agency (wise choice) you can start by picking THAT now, and discussing your future needs with them. that way any bureaucratic nuisances can be dispensed with now, before your actual search begins.

First do alot of research before you decide on a nanny because there can be problems later. And yes you can be looking starting know that way you can get all the research that needs to be done before you decide.

you cant make someone who needs a job and needs income sit around for 2 months waiting for your job to start. so if you interview someone in say june.. and think this is a great person for this .. they may really need a job with $$ and not wait for your job.. on the other hand if it is a stay home mom that wants to make money but doesn't need thejob to pay bills.. she might be very happy to know she has a job as soon as school starts..

june or july would be the earliest...

Ages and genders of kids? A co-worker has an awesome manny who is an education undergrad in his senior year. He picks the kids up from elementary school, does snack/hw, and roughhouses them into docile exhaustion before the parents arrive home. Works for him because he has practicum 3 days a week at a middle school and class 2 nights a week. Works for them because he was already background checked and clearly loves kids.
