My son is 15 months old and has started climbing everything. The other day when he was playing in his room I caught him trying to climb up into his crib. Im worried that he is going to fall and hit his head on the hardwood. Is this a sign that it's time to switch him to a toddler bed? He has attempted to climb out of the crib but the crib is really deep and has not succeeded. Should I wait?

I dont want him to get hurt but at the same time I dont know if he's ready....

What can I do next?

If he is becoming a little monkey with his climbing it is time to seriously consider another bed with some sheets/blankets from a favorite movie or theme (ie. cars Thomas the Train etc for a boy). When I was expecting my son ,I had to move my daughter from the crib to make room for him. I bought some sheets I knew she would like; put the mattress on the floor(less distance to fall out of bed until she got used to it; she never did fall out of bed though)put the sheets on it and told her this was all for her and was hers and something special as she was going to sleep like a big girl now. I will never forget the look on her face as sat in the middle of the bed pulled the sheet up to her chin and said proudly "mine". She too had been climbing in and out of her crib even with the mattress in the lowest position. Good Luck

When my girls were small and needing to be transitioned out of the crib, we simply got a twin mattress and placed it on the floor. No box spribgs. No rails. Just the mattress on the floor so that if they rolled off the would not get hurt. Worked beautifully with both. Good luck.

15 mo. is the exact age most kids start climbing, but it's a little young to be out of a crib. Unless he's already climbing out (which he may do safely forever), I'd leave him in the crib and put a soft rug and/or pillows/stuffed animals around where he might fall. Just about every American kid who's ever lived has learned to climb in/out of a crib w/o serious injury! Give him credit and tell him how to climb safely. If he's a 'normal' boy, this is about the best thing you can do 'cuz he's gonna do it wherever and whenever he can. Better to teach him to do it safely and cheer him on than to make it a fight that you can't win, eh?

15 months is too young. The little boy is just begining to be a danger to himself. Just wait another few months and you'll think he's gone suicidal. At that age they tend to pull furniture over, climb and fall, play with electrical hazards, and swallow toys. They tend to get a little better closer to age 2 and then most of the crazy stuff is over by 2 1/2. This is when it's safer to move the boy to a bed.

My daughter climbed out of her crib at 18 months and fell a two times (she bounces). After that she never did it again. She's still in a crib but she turns 2 and we'll be moving her soon.

Be sure you put up a gate in the hallway so he doesn't sneak out while you're sleeping.

My daughter made her first crib escape at a little older than your son is. Unfortunately for her it was a rather painful way to discover that she wasn't big enough to climb out successfully yet. She fell on her back and wasn't hurt badly but hurt enough to not try it again until she was bigger. Now she is 2 and can climb out without a problem and without falling.

For us it was worth it to put her back in her crib after she fell out because a toddler bed at that age would have been really difficult given her personality.

You know your son best. But I wouldn't hesitate to keep him in his crib if it were me.

He just might be ready. I moved my older son into a toddler bed when he was 2 but he tried to escape from his crib once and that was it, my youngest son has no fear and we just put him in a toddler bed. The thing with that is you may have to fight to keep him in bed since it easier to get out of, but they do learn to stay in bed. I used to put pillows beside my oldest son's bed soe if he did fall out, he would have something soft to land on!

We moved both of our daughters to a twin size bed when they where 12 months old. We bought one of those falling out of bed protector things from Toys R Us and put a couple of old comforters on the floor around the opening.

We never had a problem!

CRIB TENT!!!!!!!!!!The best thing ever.
We moved our first one out of the crib at 20 months(found him hanging by one foot from the crib head down), it was a night mare. Our second climbed at 15 months. We tried mattress on the floor(did not want to spend $70:))......after a week of after 11pm bed times and waking up at 5 am we're done . Crib tent to the rescue!!!!!!!!!
LOve it. He is 2 1/2 now is off the charts and is not crammed at all, still loves his crib(tells us to zipp him up:))He will stay in it till he is 3 at least:)

I moved my daughter around that age. She was so tall she was cramped. What I did was get a double bed frame that w/tall headboard and footboard. I put it against the walll so that she was closed in on 3 sides. I then got one of those rails that you can put up and down easy for the 4th side. I put the box springs and mattress on the floor instead of using the slats so she could crawl in and out very easily during the day. I then put up a baby gate and otherwise proofed her room. She loved it. She had room for all her animals she could play on it during the day and at night I just put the rail up. I knew if she "fell" out she couldn't fall far enough to do damage. It also helped because then when we went on vacation I could put her in a big bed and I just took the rail w/us and didn't have to worry about getting a crib somewhere. She was used to it.

We used a crib tent with my son and it worked great! I remember thinking it was a bit pricy, but I have to say it was worth every penny.
After my daughter went to a big girl bed, she stopped being a good sleeper. Naps were tough after that. Since I had this experience with her, I wanted to delay the big boy bed for my son as long as possible. The crib tent was so successful that he was 3 when he went to a big boy bed, and we have had no problems.
Good luck!
