When to Introduce Snack Cup?

I have a 10 month old and I'm wondering when to introduce one of those self-feeding snack cups that holds Cherios or smiliar circular shaped snacks. I'm thinking he could use a little snack between meals because he seems to like it when we are at TRader Joe's or farmer's markets and I give him a little snack to nosh on while we are out and about. My baby seemed to really like using a friend's snack cup at the park the other day, but I am worried about spoiling his dinner. For those of you veteran moms out there, when is too early to introduce a snack up like this?

What can I do next?

We just always have food available. My son has from the time he was little had the bottom drawer in the kitchen for non-spoiling food, and the bottom shelf on the fridge door for his milk cups, yogurt, fruit, etc.

Feeding on demand worked so well as an infant, we just stuck with it. Ironically, or not, his natural eating patterns developed into exactly as nutritionists say we ALL should eat; 5 or 6 small meals a day.

I just use zipock twist and seal cups, or ziplock baggies, and fill them with whatever for being out and about.

If you fill your snack cup with nutritious snacks, like raisins or cheerios, then what is the difference if he eats the snack and then less dinner? I know you won't give him some kind of oreos or junk food, so I guess you are just spreading his meals out more during the day. As he gets older, he will adapt to a 3-meal system, but he will always need 2 snacks between. My kids get a snack at school around 9:45, then have an after-school snack as well, but they also eat a full breakfast, lunch and dinner. I say give it to him. It will help out with his fine motor skill development!

Hello, I would say that if your baby is able to eat those things like Cheerios and such, then go ahead and give him snack cups. He might make some messes at first, but that's how they learn.
Good luck with your precious little boy.

Your 10 month old probably needs a couple of snacks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon because his stomach is so little. Just be sure to mix it up. Cheerios are fine for one snack if the other can be a fruit. I think the cup is fine as long as he is using it right in front of you. Otherwise he may try to carry it off and spill it somewhere or stuff a handful of snack in his mouth at once. Not to mention putting other items in the cup and eating those too.

He should be getting two snacks a day. Introduce away! Graham crackers are a good snack. They dissolve easily.

I thought young children needed healthy snacks because their stomachs were so little. I don't think its about age, Its about does he eat well at the next meal.

Definitely give your son the snack cup! The earlier the better. He'll learn to feed himself and develop his fine motor skills. A few cherrios or some fruit shouldn't spoil his dinner. Good luck!
