When to Drop My Son's Nap

Hi moms,

My son had 2 naps a day until he was 1. He is 28 months old now and he is taking forever to fall asleep both during his nap and at night. In an attempt to get him to sleep sooner, I have been waking him and he wakes up NOT happy. Especially for the nap. Its like he needs the sleep but it is taking sometimes an an hour to get him down. He has not been going to sleep at night until close to 11 sometimes! Has anyone else's child dropped their nap before 2 1/2 successfully? I am thinking of letting him sleep in the morning and putting him to bed at a reasonable hour, like 9. What are your thoughts? And yes, I stay with him.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the advice moms! Today I am letting him sleep in the morning as long as he wants. It is 9:40 and he is still asleep. I plan to put him to bed at 9:30. I have to be diciplined though since that is usually when he putting on his pajamas and getting ready to have his snack. Most of you gave really good advice, I just don't undestand why some moms would think this was a bad idea but not give me other suggestions as to what would be the right thing to do...

My oldest has never been a big fan of sleep...but my 5 year old is hard to get him away from his bed! He is more than happy to sleep 4 hours during the day, go to bed at a decent enough time, and sleep until noon on the weekends! We don't let him do that of course, but he would if he could!! My youngest is starting to enjoy naps again at 3...but there are days when they all go with no break. do what is right for your baby, and it make take some trial and error. good luck!

My now 3 and a half year old was the same way at that age. He would go through stages of taking forever to fall asleep, going to bed very late and sometimes not taking a nap, he would just toss and turn for over an hour. But I didnt stop the nap time, He finally got back on track for some reason. I started putting him to bed earlier like at 8pm and he started sleeping better. Try an earlier bed time, I know it sounds weird but it worked for us. Also I notice even now that if he is too over stimulated than he has a very hard time falling asleep. So I give him lunch and then let him watch a little tv before naptime to calm him down a bit.

The same as I always say...it depends on the child. My daughter stopped napping at two.....she goes to bed at 8:30-9 oclock....she sleeps till about 8:30-9 in the morning. That is OUR schedule....everyone is different.

I'd follow his cues and his natural sleep rhythms. If he needs a nap, he'll let you know.

My first two children took naps through Kindergarten but my third stopped naps at 12 months, my forth stopped naps at age two and now my 3 month old doesn't nap good at all. It sure made them sleep very long at night though. My 3 month old sleeps for 12-14 hours at night right now. I'm assuming that my three younger ones didn't take good naps because the older ones didn't. My two older ones napped at the same time because they were only 1 1/2 years apart. Anyway, they did fine without naps. Dinner time was a little cranky but they went to be early and slept all night. Good luck!

many kids give up the nap at this age.. some kids need more sleep..

we are in the same situation.. my 4 year old is horrible without a nap but with a nap she deosnt go to sleep till 10 pm.. I do try to let her sleep for an hour and that sometimes works.. but sometimes even a 30 min nap and she wont go to bed.. some of this I think is due to the summer and it being lighter later..

also she goes to preschool/daycare 2 days per week and she doesnt nap there (watches the movie during naptime) ... so on the home days she does need a nap.. it is a hard transition..

somedays I give her a nap so I get a break.. you have to do what works best for you and your family.

yes mine did my oldest one. my youngest is 24 months and dropping naps on his own. some days he does some he doesnt. dont put him down for a nap unless he just is totally misbehavng. my youngest does one on his own about every 3 days. he goes to bed at nine and up at 7 or 8 he was not a night sleeper when he was napping now that he doesnt nap he sleeps all night 98% of the time.

sounds to me like yours is outgrowing the need for a nap follow his lead. he will sleep better at night and less grouchy if he needs one he will do it on his own.

He's barely 2. If you drop that nap you better be prepared to have him in bed by 8 at the latest.
