When Should the Kids Stop Putting Their Feet in Their Mouth?

I have a 14 months old (almost 15) who always puts her foot in her mouth. Is this normal? I thought this was a 5 months old behavior, even if she has shoes or socks on she will still put her foot in her mouth and try to chew on it. She seems way too old to do that. Anyone has a kid out there who does the same, is this normal at her age??

What can I do next?

My daughter did this up until almost two. The doctor said she would stop and she did. You could use thumbsuck on her toes if you want her to stop sooner.

My middle son held his bottle with his feet til he was around 2! Was a real crowd pleaser. Course we were worried he was part monkey (turned out to be more like part Spiderman).

She'll stop eventually. I think it's ok to try to discourage it. Why not try the old 'ignore and redirect' approach if telling her it's yucky isn't working.

Good luck (least she doesn't have her fingers diggin' around up her nose all the time)!

Our daughter walked early so she did not put her feet in her mouth once she walked.. I also do not recall any other children doing this.. Just tell her, her feet are dirty and do not put them in her mouth.

My kids weren't foot-chewers, but I once saw a little girl at swimming lessons sucking on her toes (EWWW!) and she must have been at least 6 or 7. Just try to give her something else for her mouth or hands: sippy cup with water or a toy to distract her.

I'd say it's normal, kids take a while to get over the chewing phase. My daughter is 2 and still chews in things, not her feet but other things. I'm sure when she was a year she was still on her feet.

It is exceptionally healthy and good for her feet. I did a lot of research about feet before my daughter was born because her father and grandfather have flat feet and chronic pain in their knees and ankles when not wearing orthotics. Children who tug at their feet are conditioning them for a healthy future... In fact because my daughter was not a big toe eater, I massaged her feet constantly in infancy to mimic some of what she should be doing herself. I still do this... and let her go bare-foot as much as possible for healthy arch building. Count your blessings (in disguise)!

My daughter is almost 3 and still chews her toes occaisonally. She knows that shoes are yucky and she shouldn't chew them so that stopped. Try to find something your daughter thinks is yucky and tell her her shoes stepped in it or soemthing along those lines...

I was never able to come up with anything for toes, because why is that so different from thumbs? I mean seriously, hands touch so many more yucky things then clean feet that just came out of clean socks...

So my daughter who does not typically suck her thumb (but occiaionally bites her nails becuase she sees Daddy do it) does still suck / chew on her toes. It is just not that big a deal... don't worry about it.
