When Should I Try the Sippy/training Cup?

I've noticed that many trining cups are marketed for 6 months and up. When are most moms trying the cup out? Also, when have you tried diluted juice and how much at a time?

What can I do next?

I have a 10 month old daughter and I gave her a sippy cup at around 6 1/2 months. She struggled with it, but it gave me an idea of when she was thirsty for water and not for breast milk. I would suggest putting it on the table/high chair for him for now and, even if he only plays with it, he will soon get the idea and the exposure is great for his hand to mouth skills. As a side note, I haven't given my daughter juice at all.... After struggling with my older daughter now to drink water, I use juice as almost a treat, but water with meals and in-between.... (but definitely dilute it 50/50 with water if you choose to!). Congrats on your first born!

S.,

I started my daughter on a sippy cup when she was about 8-9 months. I think that when they are sturdy sitters theres no harm in trying the cup. I also started my daughter on Gerber juice at about 6 months and she is over a yr now and is drinking regular juice. I only like to giver her about 4 ounces a day. I dont want her to fill up on juice which are really empty calories. Good Luck!

I recommend giving teh sippy cup as early as possible, then by the time he should be giving up his bottles he is already used to his sippy cup and drinking enough from it. As a first one, I like "Nuby" brand, the spout is soft like a bottles' is.

I get Juicy Juice brand juice through WIC, and I usually almost put in half water/half juice in my daughter's cups. She is two and a half, and I still do this. At 7 months you may want to start out with something more gentle, like Gerber's pear Juice, and use about 1/3 water.

Right around 6 months we did the sippy cup.
We did a few ounces of juice around 6 months or so. Diluted more than 1/2 and 1/2 with water. Apple juice did not agree with my kids, so we used 100% Organic White Grape or Pear.
As a side note, I NEVER put juice in a bottle. If I gave juice it was always in a cup. It made it so much easier to break the bottle habit.

My son did not get the hang of the sippy cup until after his 1st birthday even though we started offering at 7months. About a week after his 1st birthday most of his bottles started leaking, instead of buying new nipples we purchased the playtex sippy cups. From the 1st try he got the hang of drinking out of it. I would not use any other brand; they are easy to clean and do not leak. As for giving juice, I was always told that water is best if not formula/milk. At 7 months I was told to use baby grape or pear juice cut in half with water.

we started offering sippies at about 6 or 7 months, with just water in them. The girls were pretty good with them by about 9 months and had them with water at meals. By one week before their first birthday we were off bottles and formula.
