My daughter is 3 months soon to be 4. Formula just never seems to be enough. What is the typical age to start a baby on baby food. Are there any signs to look for whe she is ready? Any advice would be very helpful

What can I do next?

We started my daughter on "solids"- rice cereal, when she was 6 months. The rice cereal doesn't really provide much nutritional value, though. It's simply to get babies used to eating off a spoon, trying diff textures, etc.

Introducing solids isn't really even necessary until they are about 1 year old, but it's perfectly OK to start around 6 months. Any sooner than that can cause problems with their stomachs since they are so small & their digestive systems are diff than ours.

Before starting any kind of food, I'd wait it out to see if your daughter is just going through a growth spurt. If that's the case, her desire for more formula will slow down.

Our doctor has told us with both of our kids we can start rice cereal at 4 months, then baby food at 6 months. Just start the cereal out at a soupy consistency and feed with a spoon then gradually thicken the cosistency to that of stage 1 baby foods. Once your daughter is used to the rice cereal and is doing well you can use oatmeal. I hope this is helpful.

Really, 4 month is the absoulute earliest, truthfully, the closer to 6 months you can wait the better. Talk to your pediatrician about this, you will get lots of advice both ways. Probably, she is just going through a growth spurt, and in a couple weeks will be back to her regular feeding habits. In order to start food though, she needs to have good head control, not have the "tongue thrust" reflux anymore, and the better she sits upright, the easier and better it is. While most 4 month olds cant sit up on their own, it seems silly to lay your baby back because she can't control her head or anything just to give her cereal! Don't rush it!!!! Good luck!
