When Should a Person Stop Leaking After Stopped Nursing?

I nursed both of my sons (oldest is 5 and youngest is 3). The first one I nursed for 13 months. Second only six months. In between I never "dried" up. I still haven't and it has been 2 1/2 years. Certain times of the month I am more likely to actually leak. I am just wondering what other people have experienced.

What can I do next?

T.,

Your post makes me feel better because it has been 8 months for me, and I'm still producing milk. I'm not leaking, but if I manually express, a little milk squirts out. (I check this like once a month in the shower, just out of curiosity.) I stopped nursing my son due to low milk production--ha ha, the joke was on me!

Sometimes it feels like my breasts fill with milk and they get sore. I actually have my annual exam tomorrow. My Nurse Practitioner is great about suggesting home remedies and natural methods; I'll come back and let you know what she says.

I was still leaking a little bit nearly 2 years after nursing. I spoke to my doctor about it, and she said that any stimulation (including water from the shower, from intimacy, or even checking to see if there is fluid coming out) to the nipples can cause the leakage. She told me to avoid as much stimulation to the nipples as possible for a month. It seemed to do the job for me.

They talked about this on The Doctors about 2 weeks ago. They said you should see your OBGYN to rule out any complications.

Hi T.,

You're not alone. After my first weaned, I was still producing milk until he was nearly 2. it eventually dried up. None of my friends had heard of this...they were quite surprised I was going through this but for me it was just a little milk so I wasn't leaking through shirts. I'm nursing my second and expect I'll go through the same thing. Have you talked to your doctor about this?

I've been thru 2 children. My first I lost at 26 weeks and my son is 2.4 years. I've never stopped leaking....I know it sucks! They (my dr) tried putting me on a scrip but it only made me suffer migrains and abdominal pains. So I just deal with it and wear washable nursing pads all the time.....

I wish you better luck than me....hopefully you won't have an adverse reaction to the meds. But deffintely ask ur dr.

After my first, it took over 2 years to completely dry up. I wasn't totally "leaking" near the end, but if I put any pressure at all around my nipples, a little milk would cmoe out. After #2, I dried up completely within a few months of weaning.
