Hi to all Mamasource moms. You have all been wonderful and your advice are all very helpful. I was wondering when should be the right time to bring my dd to the dentist for the first time? She is almost one year old. My mom says I should wait until she is older, while others say, at one year old. I am somewhat confused, but I want to do the right thing for her. Please help. Thank you so much!

What can I do next?

Three years-old is the recommended time for the first dentist appointment. My dentist wont see them until they are three unless there is a problem.

I just took my youngest at 20months. She did very well. The dentist had her sit in my lap facing me and then lean back with so her head was in the hygenists lap. They counted her teeth and then polished them which my daughter thought was fun! There was no pressure and they said they would only go as far as she was comfortable. Then she got a 'prize' and a sticker at the end which of course she was happy about. I would reccommend getting started early, I just think it makes it easier when they get older. I would reccommend a Pediatric Dentist, they do so much better with the kids. Even my oldest (now 13) enjoys the pediatric dentist (much more than she did our 'regular' dentist) I don't know where your located but I take my kids to Worthington Pediatrics, I also used to go to The Gentle Dentist in Worthington, but had to switch when my insurance changed. Wonderful experiences at both dentists.
Good Luck!

Our family dentist, who is also a pediatric dentist, says to wait until their 3rd birthday. Before that they are just too young to actaully sit still to have anything done. He did suggest to us to bring our son when we have appointments so that he learns there is nothing to be afraid of. So far my son has been to mine and my husband's teeth cleaning and will go again when we are scheduled in Dec and Jan. He will turn 3 in March next year and then it will be his turn! So far he has checked out all the stuff (tools) and ridden in the chair, he doesn't seem nervous so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way!

Good luck, I too thought that around 18months or so he needed an appointment but the dentist says as long as we are brushing at home at least 1 good time a day he is fine!
Hope that helps a little!!!

I took my kids at 2 1/2 to merely "sit" in the chair and have their teeth counted. Then they watched me have my teeth cleaned. Then at 3 I would take them for their first official "cleaning". Unless you have a specific concern 3 is probalby the norm that a dentist would want to see your child.

I'm pretty sure the standard age is 3, unless you have concerns. :)
