In my opinion they really don't need the head support at all when in their car seats. neither one of my children had them and they were just fine. Just my 2 cents
My daughter is 3 months with an average sized head but we are 75th percentile in the length dept - going to be tall like Daddy :) She cant quite hold her head up but she is just about too long for the last setting on the infant head insert in her carseat. What are your thoughts on when its safe for her head and neck safety, to remove the insert and just rely on the shoulder pads for support? thanks!

My son was 99th percentile for height...the stupid head insert got tossed after the first week...it was tweaking his neck at an unsafe angle. We used a rolled up polartech blanket, or a 'loose' insert that my mum picked up at babies'r'us. :)
We also had to go forward facing early, and into a booster seat early. There's "recommended" (based on averages, take a 6 month old Japanese baby and a 6 month old Norwegian baby...and they are NOT typically going to be the same size ;) and then there's common sense. When you don't fall into the 'average' range...avoid age recomendations as much as possible & rely on height/weight.
My daughter was tall for her age also. I had to use other means to support her head. I used blankets and shaped them around her head. This seemed to work.
The head rest isn't a necessity but just for comfort like a pillow. Since your daughter is long you may want to think about transitioning to a convertable car seat. Many people use them waaaay longer then they should. most kids should be out of them by 6th months but the bigger they are the sooner they need out. If you feel the convertable is too big for her you can use the head rest in it.
Good morning N., I have a 4 month old in my daycare and her parents just removed her's cause they felt it was making her sweat to much. When your baby can control her head movements, I think would be a good time, I'm old school, I like that added protection around the baby's head. J. L.
Because my son was a preemie, we had to go through extra "training" by the hospital staff before he went home which included car seat safety. They advised not to use the head insert at all. They said it can slip down during an accident and cause any whiplash to be much worse.
