When Do YOU Transition to Sippie Cups?

I have a 2.5 year old daughter who started on sippie cups around 7 months and was weaned from her bottle at 11 month (was breastfed so this helped).

I know the youngest sippie cups start at 6 months - just wondering how many of you go right to these versus keeping the bottle? I wonder if the handles on the cups would be beneficial to my son's little hands or a hinderance?

My 5.5 month old son doesn't really hold his own bottle all the time so I don't think he's ready for a cup, but I thought I'd ask and see what other mamas are doing with their kids and sippies!!

I started introducing the sippy cup to my, almost 8 month old, daughter around 6 1/2 months. I tried the playtex first sipster and she didn't do well with it. I tried the Nuby brand and she has done MUCH better with it. I think she was more open to the Nuby brand becuase it was more like the nipple of her bottle. She does better without handles. I give it to her at least one feeding a day for now. We had some set backs when her gums were really bothering her from teething. I'm hoping to have her fully transitioned by 9 months. Good Luck.

I start when I start solids. I just help them for the first little while and they catch on pretty fast. I don't use the plug at first so they know that liquid will come out.

We started with teh sippy at 6 months. We just put water in it and let my daughter figure it out on her own. It took maybe a month before she was using it really well. We started putting formula in it around 10 months, I think, and got rid of the bottle. She didn't hold her own bottle until like 8 months, but still used a sippy just fine.

My kids were both completely done with bottles by 9 months, and off of sippies and just on regular open cups by 18mo. I hate seeing kids who can walk carrying around bottles!

My son started using a sippy cup at 5 months but he had been holding his own bottle since 3 months (just always wanted to do stuff himself). Anyway, he never did any of the Nuk or bottle like cups (primarily because he hardly liked a bottle). My thought was that bottles were for emulating the boob so should only be used for breastmilk (or formula) so when i introduced water (it gets super hot here in the summer) I introduced the cup.

When my girls were 6mos I introduced the sippy at meal times. I took the stopper thing out and put water in it. While they were eating baby food I would give them a drink. I was more or less just getting them used to it and getting them used to it without there being formula in it so that when I got rid of the bottles it was easy. I did buy the handled ones and they learned to hold those eventually which made it easier.

I started my daughter on a sippy as soon as she could sit up by herself. so probably aroud 5 months by the time she was 10 months the bottle was gone and so was formula and the pacifier. I've seen to many ppl fight with their kids in their toddler years to get rid of the bottle or pacifier and it was just one of those things I can't tolerate.

work with him slowly if he has trouble holding it but you won't know until you try. handles really do help when they are small. although it didn't matter to my daughter.

Hi there,

I can't speak to the bottle because our 6 month old has always refused to use a bottle. In an attempt to help her get her source of liquid from something other than my breast (so that I can leave the house for more than an hour!), we just introduced her to a sippy cup. She understands that liquid comes out of the mouthpiece but she's not at all coordinated enough to hold it on her own, nor does she seem terribly interested in doing so. I make it part of her routine during feeding times (she just started solids) but she usually just pushes it away. She's clearly not ready for a sippy, yet I am continuing to show it to her, let her play with it when it's empty and in general, getting her gradaully used to it. My hope is that as she continues to develop, she'll begin drinking from it. Good luck!

the nubby cups are wonderful for breastfed babies- we started my son about 6 months since he was sooo interested in cups- they have the handles, and soft top. He would only take juice from them though and wouldn't have anything to do with pumped milk in them-lol

We introduced it at 7 months, and she was a pro by 8 months. At first, she refused to hold it herself, Then, it took a little while to realize that she had to tip it UP to get the liquid out (she was already good with the straw). She was off the bottle by 11 months. Now we're starting with the open cup (yeah, fun times)! I figure, it doesn't hurt to try it--eventually he'll figure out how to hold it and how to get the liquid out.

We switched at one year. We started dabbling a few months before that, but finally cut it off at one year. Our son refused to use cups with handles and didn't like the "nipple type" cups. I personally think that 6 months is a bit early. Those types of sippie cups are basically bottles at look like cups, so you are just purchasing an additional item! I mean if they suck off of it like a bottle, is it really any different?

We went cold turkey on sippy cups at 12 months exactly. Neither of our kids were really crazy about them prior to that despite multiple attempts to get them to use them.

After 12 months, there was only 1 option, and both did brilliantly. We had to experiment with a few different brands, but we got it without too many problems.

Good luck.

Both our kids started transitioning at about 10 months. We used the Nubie cups to start with. They have the silicone soft mouth piece and are narrow and easier to hold in the middle. If they were refusing the sippy then I would switch back to the bottle just for that feeding. Within a few weeks the bottles were totally gone. I didn't care for the ones with handles. We had a couple different kinds but they had to many parts and didn't seem as easy to use for the kids. Now they use the basic plastic cups and lids.
