When Do Toddlers Transition to One Nap per Day?

Hi Mama's,
My little one (my first and only) is a year old and moving out of the infant room at her daycare next week. She has been taking a morning and afternoon nap, each about an hour (both at daycare and at home on weekends) and sleeps from about 7:30pm to 6:30am without waking. I was told that in the 1 year old class, there is only one nap typically around noon. This week was the 'transition week' and she only took one nap. The result was that she was incredibly cranky and crying after I picked her up and she had to nap before dinner. So my question is, would you other mom's consider it too soon to make a one year give up the second nap at daycare? I really don't want her to have to sleep once I get home from work since 1. I have limited time with my baby as it is and 2. her bedtime is 7:30 so napping before dinner is too close to bedtime. Should I insist that daycare adhere to her schedule? (at present there are only 2 in her class, so I don't see this as a huge inconvenience) What do you all think?

What can I do next?

I didn't read everyone's responses, so I apologize if I repeat anything.

I don't think you can ask them to adhere to her schedule. The moms that I know who's kids are in daycare at that age..and I have a few...HAD to put their kids to bed earlier and HAD to stick to their bedtime routine. It took a week or so and they said it was awful, but the kids did adjust. My one friend took her son outside for a while, the read books in a quiet space and made dinner quick and easy to try to ease the transition. From what she said, at 13 months, he was going to bed at 7 (if he made it that late) and getting up for the day at 6:30-7.

My kid at 13 months was still taking 2 naps and still has to some days at 19 months.

I hope that helped! :)

My oldest switched to one nap at aroun 18 or 19 mos. My youngest kind of transitioned himself at I think maybe 15 or 16?? He would taking his morning nap but then not his afternoon one. Bedtime was at 6:00 for a long time!

I have known children show dropped to one nap before their first birthday and I have known children who at 2 still hadn't made that transition. How L. is she napping during that one nap? Would it be possible for them to "wean" her into the new routine by allowing her to take the first nap but shorten it by 10 mins or so every couple days until its gone.

I am an advocate of allowing children to create their own schedule. I fully believe routine is important, but no one can force me to go to bed at a certain time, so why should we force a child to.

The internet told me 15 to 18 months they should still nap twice per day.

1 year is typically when they will drop to one nap. As with anything it will take her a little time to adjust. She may just start to sleep a little later in the morning.

As far as asking the daycare to keep her current schedule I think it would depend on whether she is in a big center or a private home daycare. Normally in a daycare center they will not make an exception all the kids lay down at the same time.

Good luck!!

I honestly think it depends on the child. My son was doing one nap just before he turned one (had to move him from 2 naps since he was waking up at like 2am and playing) and then at age 2 had to take him off naps entirely for the same reason though it was hard with daycares since they force kids to "rest" and so we had a few years where he would either stay awake until 2 or 3am or go to bed at his 8pm bedtime but wake up around 2 or 3 am just so that he could take that "rest" they required. My son just doesnt need that much sleep (though I certainly do..ha ha)

Good luck!

My daughter goes to daycare. They transitioned them to one nap a day at 1 year. It is approximately 2 hours in length.

I think you need to give your daughter another week for the transition. She likely just needs to adjust to taking her full nap at one time.

Personally, if there are only two kids in the 'class' I would insist that they let her keep her nap schedule.

I say this because I believe in letting young children sleep as much as they need to - it makes for happier kids (and parents). Some kids just need more sleep than others. Yours may be one of them, or she may change her sleep schedule herself and move to one nap in her own time. Personally, I think 1 is too young to go down to one nap, but that's based on my kids and seeing the kids of my friends and family develop.

As an example, one friend's DD stopped napping at all at 2, another friend's DD stopped napping at 3, and my DD is still taking an afternoon nap every other day, sometimes every day. All three girls are within 6 months of each other in age, they are all 4-1/2 to 5 years old right now. (Oh, and my DD goes to sleep every night by 8pm, whether she naps or not & regardless of how long her nap was.) My kid just likes (and needs) a LOT of sleep.

Good Luck!
