When Did Your Period Return After Weaning Your Baby Off?

I weaned my daughter off last month (last nursing was on May 2nd, day before her 1 year birthday - I nursed exclusively for 12 mos). My period hasn't returned yet. When did yours return?

edit: I'm curious as I can't start my b.c. until it returns, and tired of condoms...not that we get busy too often due to a 3 yo and 1 yo!!! LOL!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It finally came back, about 6 weeks after I finished my last nursing.

I had my period with my first when he was 6 weeks old, my daughter at 7 weeks, and both were breastfed exclusively until they were over a year. I am so jealous of ya'll who got a long reprieve, lol!

You don't really need to wait until your period returns to start hormonal contraception, you just need to know for certain that you aren't already pregnant. A simple blood test should confirm that. Please call your Dr if you really want to switch to another form of contraception and in the mean time you might want to add spermicide (available as Gynol II over the counter) when you use condoms for extra protection. I conceived my 3rd child 12 months after giving birth to my second while using a condom without additional spermicide. My baby is such a blessing, but these last 17 months have been really difficult since the kids are less than 2 yrs apart. nurse midwife mom of 3

1st time, breastfed exclusively for 9 mos , didn't have a period until 3 months after weaning. 2nd time , BF for 13 mos , had several periods during & got a period a couple weeks after weaning. It has been 3 mos, since weaning & my periods have been irregular.

For me it took 2 mos AFTER I weaned completely when I nursed exclusively for a year...everyone is different though! Hope it returns soon for you!

With my first I got my period the second month after his birth. With my second I got it 6 months after his birth and with my third I didn't get my period until just before he turned one year and he is still nursing at 16 months.

I weaned my son from his day time feedings while I was working when he was a year old, my period came back 3 weeks later, even though he was still nursing twice a day. I think it's different for everyone.

My period came back while nursing both times. Once at 5 months and once at 8 months. It is different for everyone. You body will need to adjust and figure itself out.

The first time mine came back before I went back to work the 2nd time (I had 6 weeks off for c-section, went back to work for a week, then was off for 6 weeks when she came home from hospital). The second time I started at about 9-10 weeks because it was shortly after I started back to work when she was 8 1/2 weeks. Both were exclusively breastfed/pumped for a year (babyfood/cereal at 6 months but no formula). Yep - I got gipped - short pregnancies, bled the first couple of months with the second, 21-24 day cycles, and I didn't get that breastfeeding no period break!

With my first, it started about a month after he weaned. But - I'm wondering why you need to wait. My doc had my start my bc 8 weeks after my son was born even though I was nursing and hadn't had a period yet. If you don't want to keep waiting, you should ask your Gyn why you need to.

Still nursing my 19mo at night before bed. My period returned after 10 mos.

I can't stand the condoms, either. I tried a diaphragm and it was ok, but uncomfortable sometimes. We use w/drawl "method" right now...I know it's risky, but it's one of the only things that's totally natural and safe and we'll be trying for another LO at some point anyway!

Both times while I was still exclusively nursing--6 months the first time--2 months the second time--not fun.

Even though I cut back nursing at 18 months to only 3-4 times a day I still had no period for about 2 years. I finally quiet nursing completely at 2 1/2 years so I think its really when your body decides its baby making time. Why can't you start the pill until after your period comes back? I was on Camilla until the very end, period or no period.

Mine comes back around 8-10 months, and I'm still 100% nursing when it arrives. I imagine yours will be back within a month or two;-)
