When Did Your Kids Go Back to School After Surgery?

HI. My 5 yr old son had tonsils and adenoids out exactly one week ago today. He seems to be getting better...but I don't think he's ready to return to school yet. Last night was the first night he didn't wake up crying. He's still not eating much and has lost weight. When did your kids return to school after this procedure? Was it closer to two weeks? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He had a good night last night, but still not eating and needing meds every 4-6 hrs. So I think we will see how it goes tonight and tomorrow, and try to get him back on Thursday. He is in pre-K ( young fives) and has childcare afterwards, so we can't really break up the day unless we get a babysitter for the afternoon. I can tell he's lost a little weight. It's just been tough..a lot tougher than I expected :( thanks.

I suggest asking his doctor. With every surgery I had, including a tonsillectomy, my doctor suggested how long to stay out of working. Doctors also described what I should look for when I'm ready to resume normal activities.

I would keep him home until he's feeling better. At 5, school is less important than giving your son time for his body to heal.

Our son had just turned 4 when he had his out.
I kept him home 2 weeks.
He felt a lot better after 1 week but I knew he'd be running around a lot at preschool so I made sure he was all healed up to be really ready for it.
Our doctor was all for this.
Too much too soon can be a set back for recovery.

mine only missed a week after this particular operation, but they both bounced back really quickly.

i say you keep him home until you're comfortable that he's comfortable.

No earlier than a week. If he catches something from another kid, you will wish to God that you had kept him home.

I think since he has crossed the one week mark with no complications, I'd consider sending him back starting tomorrow for a couple of hours, and then increase by 2 hrs on Thurs and Fri with a full day back on Monday. Let the teacher know that he should refrain from gym and recess (strenuous activity) for another week or so.

There is keeping them home long enough, and then there is keeping them home too long. At the point he is sleeping through the night, it is time to start back into the school schedule swing. Waiting too long will only lead to other issues.

Good luck!
