So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. My first son walked before 1 year, so im just waiting for the 2nd son to start. I wasnt too worried but he went to the orthopedic dr yesterday to check his hips (he was a little squished while i was pregnant so they checked him at 3 mos, 9 mos and 13 months) and he is perfectly normal, but she was surprised he wasnt walking yet. So, that kind of alarmed me. Before that, i wasnt too concerned. But it sounds like its not uncommon to still be crawling, so im not going to call his ped just yet. I think he'll be up and about soon enough. Thanks again everyone.

Around 13 or 14 months.

The longer they crawl, the better for later learning. There is an interesting study on this where they showed the longer babies crawled, the better readers they were later in life. So be glad! :)

Hi L.! I have a 15-month-old daughter who took her first steps just after her first birthday. I do know, however, that I did not walk until I was 14 months old. I believe the rule of thumb is not to be too concerned until your little one is 18 months old and still not walking. It wouldn't hurt to check with your ped. if that will give you some peace of mind. If it makes you feel any better, a close friend of mine is an occupational therapist who works exclusively with children. She informed me that crawling is a very important stage of development, and babies who crawl longer before walking tend to have less learning problems later in life. I believe it has something to do the the visual-motor coordination used in crawling. So... don't worry about your little guy crawling for longer than others. It may benefit him in the long run. Hope that helps to ease your mind!

I have two (usually) wonderful boys, too! They are 26 months apart...so much fun.

My older son (now 4) didn't walk until he was 16M. My younger son was about 14M. Doctor said NOT to worry at all. Her daughters both didn't start until 18M.

It's fun when the second starts walking, though. My boys play "chase" every night after bath (usually naked!) and it's so awesome to have them playing together like that.

My little one walked the day she turned 10 months, took 5 steps and she was off. Now if I could just get her to sit down for more than an minute. My first 3 started 2 weeks before the first birthday, the day of, and my son was 4 months after so I wouldn't worry.

Totally normal, don't worry =) Mine walked exactly a week before her first bday. He is definitely in the "normal range" for a awhile...

11-14 months is considered typical, and kids will practice pull to stand and cruise along furniture for 6 weeks prior to taking solo steps.

13 months is still well within the typical range, especially if he is able to pull himself up into standing and play in stance without anything "usual" looking. They are developing postural control, learning how to balance their front and back muscles and figure out what to do with those big bellies while they practice all these great skills. Then, once they are feeling brave- or fearless- off they go.

Give lots of floor time to crawl, pull to stand, space to cruise along furniture or up steps (with you to guard). Discontinue any and all devices, such as Exercausers. Those do not help, and studies have suggested they actually SLOW independent walking by up to 7 weeks. If you notice anything unusual, like excessive stiffness or your son grimacing when you bend his hips to change his diaper, check with your pediatrician.

Have fun!

My daughter walked at 9 months but my neice who was only 5 months younger than her didn't walk til she was about 13 or 14 months. Every child is different so be patient and if he isn't walking in another month than maybe bring it up to the dr.

My boys are exactly the same age as yours! My older son walked a few days before his first birthday, and my younger son is 13 months, and barely walking with a push-toy...he's just a fast crawler so I think he sees no point to walking when he can get from point A to point B by crawling. I wouldn't worry until he's 16-17 mo and not walking.

I know how you feel. After my son turned 12 mos. I was worried that he wasn't walking only crawling. So it was hard to be patient but sure enough at 15 mos. he started. He hasn't sat down since (he's 23 mos.) and I haven't had to go to the health club since. It is true that boys just take their time with everything. I remember I had to carry my son around everywhere, one day I saw a lady with her child around my son's age walking, and I said to her "oh I can't wait", she said "oh yes, you can". She was right.

Mine started walking in the 10th month. However, gross motor functioning was really his thing and he excelled in that while language development lagged (didn't say ONE WORD til he was 17 months).

At 13th months he's probably fine. It's still totally normal not to be walking by then. Chances are he is probably putting most of his energy toward another developmental area.

My son started walking at 11 months. My daughter, who turns one on Sunday, still doesn't even stand. I'm guessing she won't walk until at least 14 months or later. Both are perfectly normal.

My daughter started walking a week after her first birthday. I asked our ped at her one year check up and he said not to worry until about 18 months.
