When Did Your Baby Roll Over?

My baby boy will be 4 months on the 4th and he rolled over from back to front today for the first time. He has now done it several times. Is this early or normal? As soon as he did it, he pulled his legs under him like in crawling position and was getting up on his forearms. My 2 yr old was crawling at 5 months but wasn't even doing this stuff yet at this age. Are we ahead of the game or am I just overreacting? I'm not ready for this baby to be mobile yet. He's supposed to still be my newborn. :(

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the responses. I guess its true that every little one is different in their own special ways. My first 2 were preemies that were small and sick and the last 2 have been big guys that are healthy. So I just don't feel like I know what to expect with these guys. Thanks again for all your input!!

My first child rolled over a few times at about 3 months and then didn't do it again for several months. I then thought she would never crawl because she rolled everywhere. She loved that mode of transportation. My second child NEVER rolled. My third child rolled probably around about 5 months. They all develop in their own special ways. Enjoy!

Both my girls rolled over by 4 months. However, my first did not crawl until she was nine months old. She found she could get anywhere by rolling. She had no need to learn how to crawl until later. My second little girl is almost 8 months old now and just started crawling. Each child is different. We sit back and compare each child and see so many similarities and many differences. Enjoy each moment.

He sounds right on track & maybe a little ahead. My last was rolling across the room at 4 months while other babies we knew were still "lay where you put them" until 8 month or more. And she started the on the knees rocking before 5 months even though she was a 36 week preemie.
She is our last so I, like you, was hoping she'd be a baby as long as possible!

I think your a little ahead of the game...:) my soon to be 6 month old has rolled from stomache to back since 4 month but never back to stomache ....and I think we are a little delayed in crawling cause (hes never on the floor) we have hard wood or tile (NO CARPET) and I feel bad so hes not crawling yet tring but not there yet! he has sat up with out support for 2 months and will even pull him self up and holding on take 2 or 3 steps.... we may never crawl...lol Isnt all this so much fun! enjoy every stage! I know I am! :)

My 2 1/2 year old rolled from her back to her side before we left the hospital. She started rolling from back to tummy at 7 weeks. At three months she would roll from back to tummy and push up on her arms and could scoot around the living room. She was sitting herself up and crawling at 4 1/2 mths and took her first steps at 7 1/2 mths. She is our second baby and I've heard they are slower and faster than first babies. I thought our first did things early - sitting and crawling at 6 mths, walking at 9 - but our second is even faster. And as far as seconds talking later, that's not true with my kids either. My second started talking earlier and clearer than my first.

I think the second child watches the first child and develops faster in the gross motor department; I have heard they are slower to talk because big brother or big sister talks for them.

I have a two month old and she has yet to even enjoy being on her tummy, but a forum that I belong to with other moms of kids similar ages, have babies that have already rolled over at 2 months! I don't rush it, as long as they are healthy and developing correctly. That must be so exciting seeing him roll all over the place!

Well, it all up to the child! Our first child was really early. She pulled herself up in her crib at 4 months and 3 weeks. She started to walk at 8 months and 1 week. Then we had our middle child who didn't walk until she was 11 months and our son who was 9 months. They all have different muscles and some are stronger than others. Good luck and love the moment before they get up and moving. lol

My daughter was rolling over around 3 months. My niece and nephew were both a little later than that, but not by much. You really can't gauge it by other children. Your son will do things on his own time. Just encourage him and get ready for a mobile little man. :)

I have three...the baby is doing everything a little faster than her brothers. I suspect your "baby" will want to keep up with the older kids and won't stay a "newborn" much longer. Funny how children never want to cooperate with our plans for them, huh?

4 months is normal for starting to roll, but 5 months was early for your other to crawl, so who knows this one might too. mine were 7,8, and 9 months before they crawled. it's so sad that they grow up so fast. enjoy them!

My son rolled over at 2 and a half months and one of my friend's baby rolled over at 3 months. Each child is going to be different. Watch out though, once my son started rolling over, he didn't want to stay still anymore and ended up crawling at 5 months, walking at 8 and a half months, and running by 11 months. I wasn't ready for him to start all of that so early, but he didn't give me much of a choice!

Four months sounds about right! What I remember is that the warning on my bassinet said to stop using it when the baby reaches 3 months or starts to roll over - whichever comes first.
