When Did You Put Your Toddler into "His/her" Own Bed?

Hi Ladies:

When do I change over my 27 months old crib to a toddler bed? I have some friends who tell me just to leave her in her crib unless she is climbing out- which she is not and I have some friends whose toddlers are in beds at age 2. Not sure when to make the switch.

What can I do next?

I moved my daughter into a toddler bed when she was a little over 1 year old. She absolutly hated her crib. She would scream for quite some time after we put her down to bed. Plus she had learned how to climb out. We bought her a toddler bed and she loved it and we never had any more problems putting her to bed. You just have to wait until she is ready. If she is not climbing out and you are not expecting another a child I wouldn't worry about switching yet. Wait until she is 3 years old.

Hi

Both of my boys (now 8 and 3) changed to regular twin size beds at 2 years old. We use the bed rails and never had any issues. They loved it.

I have been wanting to ask that same question. My son just turned 2 and he has never tried to climb out of his crib and he loves it there. So when should you change it?

Hi,
27month old should be in a regular bed by now, my 32 month old was in a toddler bed at 15months and when he turned about 25months I bought him a captains bed I put a rail on one side of the bed since the other is against the wall and he was doing great, so about 3months later I removed the rail and now he sleeps without it it's great and he loves it because it makes him feel like a big boy, but every child is different so I think you should try to put him in a toddler bed something that she likes for my son I got the one from the cars movie it was an easy transition, they have alot of beds out there to make it easier for the parents.

Good Luck!

My son was out by 18 months. But we had baby #2 on the way, and I wasnt about to buy another crib, so he was rushed. :) We bought those bed rails for his twin size bed, and we never had an issue.

honestly, this all depends on how you feel about it, how your child is doing in the crib (getting too big for it? trying to climb out?) AND it has to do with your living situation. if you don't mind that she is still in the crib, and as long as she still fits, and doesn't climb out, then there is no reason to put her in a toddler bed if you don't want to. i wanted to put my daughter in a toddler bed when she turned 1, like a friend of mine did (and her son slept much better once he was in the bed instead of a crib). the only problem that i have is that i share a room with my daughter and i don't want her getting into stuff while i'm sleeping, plus we live in the basement, and don't have a regular door on our bedroom, so she can easily push open the door, and i don't want her climbing on the couches and getting hurt while we're sleeping. my friend's son has his own bedroom, and it's completely baby safe! so when he turned 1, they got rid of the crib and put him in one of those car beds (no railing, but it's pushed up against the wall) and just puts up the baby gate so he can easily see out, yet not roam the apartment while they are sleeping. so, if you want to keep her in there for another couple of months, or even another yr, i don't see a problem in that (we may have to keep our daughter in the crib until she's 3 if we can't build another room for her.) and if you decide to get her a bed, just make your life easier, put up a baby gate in the doorway so you can keep her door open and have the peace of mind knowing she's safe! good luck, i hear it's a very easy transition!

WE moved our son to a regular twin bed w/ rails at age 2 since we were due w/ another. Transition went super super easy. My second is now 19 mths and since he hasn't seemed interested in climbing out he is still there! Will wait a little longer!

My son is 34 months and loves the crib - has no interest in moving to a bed. He never has tried to climb out so we just figured we'd leave him in the crib since he's happy in it. We are going to try to transition him to a bed within the next three months by totally redoing his room into a "big boy" room. Each child is different though - we transitioned my daughter to a bed at 23 months...You just need to do what suits your child the best. If your daughter is beginning to climb out though, it's time to switch to a bed for safety reasons.

The best time to move her out of her crib is when she can stand at the rail with it all the way up and her whole chest is above the rail. Typically about 36in. We moved my son when he was about 29 mos. I totally redid his whole bedroom from a nursery to a big boy room. New paint bedding and all.

My son climbed out at just past two, and we had to move him. This is not an especially fun task if your child is not able to hold on to instructions and follow them for a long period of time.

If you can tell your daughter to sit in a chair until you tell her to get up, and have her actually stay there, you may have success. If not, most kids just keep getting out of the bed. Then you have to put them back in the bed, and on and on and on, because they just don't get it. It's like teaching a dog to sit, but having them have no concept of "stay". They get in the bed, but as soon as you walk out of the room or turn your back, they climb out. Not all kids, mind you, but most.

My advice would be to wait until she climbs out, or gets really close to three and has good ability to follow instructions.

I think a good "rule of thumb" is to transition into a bed when the child is potty-trained. This can help with the whole "big girl" aspect and also prevent frequent changing of the bed sheets. Of course, if she learns to climb out before being potty-trained, then that is another story.

Just my two cents. Good luck!
