At what age can babies start eating rice?? In the Chinese culture, they make rice porridge (or congee). Can they eat that?? It's just like baby rice cereal except just different, right?!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried giving my son rice porridge/congee and he loves it! Once he got introduced to chicken, he likes it even better. Good choice!

My son is half-Chinese and had rice porridge as one of his first solids after six months. My in-laws made it extra-bland and made sure there were no chunks in it. My husband and all his siblings grew up on the stuff. The only real difference is that the homemade porridge is not fortified with iron like the commercially-made cereals. If your baby is drinking iron-fortified formula then give the homemade porridge and don't worry about iron. If you are still breastfeeding you might want to ask the doctor if you need to supplement with iron drops. Pediatricians seem to have differing opinions on that.

Pediatricians always tell you to give them rice cereal at 6 months - I'd think as long as the rice is mushy in texture (so they can't inhale any individual grains of it) it should be fine for a baby that age.

Hi,
I'm half Chinese and while I didnt give my daughter that until she was way older, I have given my son the rice water. I cook a pot of rice normally (stove top not in a rice cooker) and remove most of the rice until all that is basically left is the bits stuck on the sides of the pot. I add water to it and bring to a boil and scrape off the rice on the sides. I let it cool and strain the rice out and put the liquid into a bottle. I dont give it to him to have just because, but it works wonders when he has an upset stomach. I think it has something to do with the starch. I checked with my pediatrician and she said it was fine to give it to him.
I know it didnt answer your question directly but I hope it helps a little! :D
Good Luck!

Solids at 6 months. We did not give our baby commercial rice cereal but made rice porridge like congee, and cooked it in an iron pot (his iron levels were fine without drops and with no fortified anything). But before cooking the rice we pulverized it in a coffee grinder (cooked 2:1 water in 10 minutes). We also used brown rice instead of white rice.

Depending on age you can make it thinner or thicker. My nephew is 11 months old and eats rice. His sitter makes it pretty soft. My oldest son didn't like rice till he was 2 and we're full Chinese. My younger son started eating rice at about 10 months. You can cook the congee with chicken stock or add veggies to it to make it healthier.
