Wheezing - Philadelphia,NY

My son has been teething for a couple weeks on and off. The last couple days he has had a runny nose which I know is typical. This afternoon I noticed him wheezing and didn't think much of it. I noticed it again tonight when I put him to bed. Is this from the runny nose or something more serious? He's not struggling to breathe in any way. I looked at his chest and he's not retracting and he doesn't seem to be gasping or breathing faster than normal. He also has a dry cough but he has had that in the past when teething. Do I wait it out or call the doctor? They always say bring him in but I am not interested in waiting over and hour for them to say it's nothing or for his symptoms to disappear when we get there. Any thoughts?

So What Happened?

The wheezing seems to have stopped. The next day I noticed it a little once durring the day and that was it. I haven't gone in to the doctor because it seems to have resolved itself. Thanks for the tips and I will be sure to ask at the next check up next month. If it comes back before though I will definately take him in.

Don't worry about the wait. It's better to be safe than sorry. If you take him to the doctor, they can make sure it's not turning into a bad infection.

This isn't the most profound response but I say go with your gut. You know your son better than anyone so if you don't think it's serious than you're probably right. Unfortunately my son didn't experience the cough or the runny nose when he was teething so that would have been different to me so I can't say whether or not the wheezing thing would be associated. As long as he's not in distress (and it seems you would certainly know with your medical background - good for you!) then I would probably just keep an eye on it and wait and see if it gets any worse. Like I said, you know best and you would be able to tell if something was seriously wrong! Good luck!

i would take him to the dr. just to be safe.
my 2 mo. old daughter has something called larangomalacia... which means that the top of her windpipe is not fully formed yet. the dr. said its quite normal & they outgrow it., & that they just breath a little louder that other babies. but when she has runny nose or is congested is sounds alot worse that it is.
but then she started coughing & it sounded even worse I must of took her to the dr. about 3 times, when finally they did a chest x-ray & she had bronchial pnemonia when she was just 20 days old & wound up in the hospital for 4 days.
so better be safe than sorry & just gi to the dr.!

it could be something as simple as post nasal drip causing the wheezing or a cold or something as bad as bronchitis you should take him to the doctor so that they can check it out and rule out the later of the three and just to make sure he's healthy my son tends to get a wheezing and dry cough when he gets an ear infection thats the only way i know he has one cause the ear pain doesn't bother him at all this may also be the case with your son
