What Would You Do with a $100 Giftcard for a 3 Y/o?

My little baby will be 3 on Monday. He got a $100 gift card from my parents at his party. I got him a DS lite I will be giving him on Monday. I was thinking about getting him a couple games with the GC but what to do with the rest? Usually whenever my kids get cash it goes straight to their bank accounts, but its not cash. I think a field day at the toy store would be a blast for him, but he has a lot of toys. I would feel guilty just buying him clothes with it. What would you do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

"I" already bought him the DS. I didnt spend his giftcard on it. I was thinking about buying a game with the giftcard and wanted some ideas on what to do with the rest. Still has a $100 giftcard.

I got him a DS because hes my kid and I can! There are several great learning games for it.

It is a VISA. Thats a great idea to buy it from him and put the money in the bank! Zoo membership and Six Flags sounds really cool too! Thanks Ladies!

Buy a year/season membership to a kid's entertainment place, the zoo, science center, kid's museum, etc. It's the gift that gives all year, and it's not another pointless toy creating clutter & that will be ignored after a week of use.

I am not one for doing clothing & necessities as gifts for a kid that age, personally.

Why would you feel guilty buying him clothing with the GC? That is something that he needs and must have. How about some snow clothing for this winter?

I would buy the 2 games and spend what's left on clothes and shoes. It's a happy compromise.

What would I do? Well, I would never have used it for a DS!

You don't say where the GC is for, so it's hard to answer, but if it's for a multi-department store, I'd buy one toy for him and "buy out" the rest of it for his savings account. If I didn't have the money to buy out the remainder, I'd save the card for things he needed throughout the year (including clothes). My son wouldn't know what Grandma gave him or even understand what that amount is, so there would be no guilt involved.

If the card is a Visa gift card and can be used anywhere, then I'd use it for a membership to the Science Center or Children's Museum or Zoo.

I would never allow my child to have a "field day" at a toy store. To me, that is just wrong on many levels. But we live simply. A foreign concept to most Americans, but it works wonderfully for us.

Blessings.

I always do half & half with fun stuff/toys & clothes. If you'd rather it goes into his bank account, use the $100 yourself on groceries or whatever & then reimburse it with your own cash into his account. Easy peasy!

If the gift card is to a place like Target or somewhere you can buy things for your home or whatever, I'd "buy out" the remainder of his gift card and put the cash in his bank account. Then you can use the rest of the gift card for toilet paper or clothes for him.

If it's to ToysRUs or something, maybe pick out some things for next season that he will grow into - the bike is a great idea.

A tricycle?

I would get clothes though, and a couple of toys. Possibly something he needs for his room.

Why would you get a video game for a 3 year old? My 8 year old doesn't even have one. Just curious. Seems wasteful to me.

I'd purchase a few basic toys that he'll enjoy (like a trike or other active toy) and use $50-60 of it to buy clothes in one size larger for him to grow into.

Get him a couple games, and a protective rubberized cover for it, he will drop it...I would let him pick out one toy and depending on where the GC is for I would either get him clothes, shoes or hang unto it for a rainy day..if it os a general visa GC then you can also use it to buy a zoo membership or something fun that will keep on giving ;-)

I'd let him pick out new bedding (assuming he isn't still using his baby stuff.) When my son turned 4 he picked out Toy Story bedding and wall decals. He is SOOO proud of his "Toy Story Room" and doesn't even notice that the walls are still lavender (from previous owners.)

I would buy him a wonderful bike. I know in MI it will be cold soon but still, it would be totally fun now. A big boy bike that has training wheels with his favorite characters on it. A 14" would fit him for a couple of years too. Ours got a 12" and it was way too small for him in about a month. His knees hit the handle bars.

I almost always buy my kids gift cards from them (unless if they are to Toys R Us) and give them the cash/put in the bank.
Since it is a Visa one, and he is young and wouldnt know better, I would buy clothes, or something he needs. I love the zoo membership idea. I was going to ask my mom for that for my bday this year.

How about taking him to the store, and letting HIM pick out something with what is left? Walk him through a store and tell him how much $ he has and that he can choose. Guide him through the process. Some may think that 3 is too young for this, but I personally think it's a great age to start teaching them the value on money and how to be responsible and set limitations.

I would get him two games. One for when he is 4 years old and hold onto it until then. With the rest of the money I would consider getting him a sled for the winter snow.

I may also consider buying him some conventional board games as well to promote and develop his interactions with others as well as learning.

I wouldn't feel guilty about getting clothes for him if he has a need for them. Winter is coming and snow suits, boots, gloves, hats and the like aren't free. You'll figure it out and it will be fine.

Enjoy and Happy Birthday to your little one.

Can you save it for a 2-wheeler w/training wheels, or can you buy a really cool wagon or some kind of riding toy? You don't have to use it all at once. Christmas is coming. Does he need a new carseat or anything like that? I wouldn't waste it on junk.
