What Would Make a 2.5 Year Old Limp?

So today my 2.5 year old son woke up limping and saying his knee hurt. Yesterday he went to the zoo and walked around a while, but no injury. He was fine last night jumping and running all around. If you ask him he says he hurt it when he was sleeping. He looked so pitiful I took him to the pedi and they did an x-ray to rule out a toddler fracture, which came back normal. So now we are supposed to wait to see if it gets better or go back for blood work if it doesn't. So what else would make him limp, visibly uncomfortable and slightly swollen (but no fever)?

What can I do next?

Did your son have a cut or any other kind of injury recently? My daughter was 3, fell and cut her head and had to get staples- a few days later she began to limp and could not bend her knee. We took her for xrays and they showed nothing - a couple of days later the swelling finally showed up and it turned out she had septic arthritis. This stemmed from the cut in her head..where an infection had entered her bloodstream- the infection settled in her joint where it was too small to pass. Not very common in the suburban doctor offices, but Cook's childrens hospital has about 3 kids there at any given time with this. Turned out we had to have emergency surgery and she was hospitalized for almost a week.
Keep your eyes on it..if it swells, get them back in for bloodwork ASAP. Good luck!

You need to have him checked out by a chiropractor that specializes in children. It could be his spine is out of alignment. My daughter's pelvis was out due to a fall on the playground and was gently put back into place. I highly recommend going to see Dr's Jim and Cindy Haggerton at Lifetime Family Wellness in Hurst. Their entire practice focuses on pregnant women and children starting a birth. They also own a birthing center. I will attach the following link

You need to get your son to a pediatric ortho. My Daughter also the same age, woke up one morning not being able to walk on her left leg. Very strange, and she would cry like it was hurting. Her father and I could not figure out what happened, because she had not been injured. We took her to the Er after several hours, she would not walk but crawl real strange. The ER doctor was an idiot, because by this point she had a feaver. He said she sprang her knee and has a soar throut(She had drank orange juice that morning). Anyways he said the sprang would get better and gave us an antibotic for the imaginary soar throut. This was on a Sat. That Monday, she still was not walking. I took her to her regular doctor and she sent us immediately to the ortho. Who explained that she propley had an infection in her Knee that was very serious. That two year olds do not have sprang, they're joints muscles are still to flexiable. That is had to be an infection. Which happens sometimes in young children, and if not treated could become very serious. He said for us to watch her because she was on the antibotic, but the antibotic may not completely stop the infectin. That it's possible that the infection could come back in a year, and then she would have to be hospitalized and hooked up to IVS. So for the past four months we've been watching her, to see if anything shows up. Of coarse we pray that it will not. I am not trying to scare you. but from my experience two years olds limping with out a fracture is not a good thing. If he is still doing it I would call the Ortho. Just to be on the safe side.

There are a few things that could make your son's knee be swollen and painful without a fever. It could be the beginning of an infection. Some kids can have an infection and not run a fever. Not everyone follows the rules when they get sick. I would keep an eye on it and if it gets more red, swollen or warm to the touch take him back in for blood work.

Could it be growing pains? Or maybe he has shin splints from walking so much at the zoo?

I would think your pediatrician would mention these things. Have him soak in a warm bath and take some tylenol or motrin.

I hope he gets better! GL!
