Hi, My daughter has a friend with milk, egg, and penut allergies. We are having her over for my dd's 10th birthday this weekend and I'm looking for advice on foods to serve that everyone can eat. She always has to bring her own cupcake but I want to be able to serve something that can include her. Her mom is helping me with cake recipe but I'm interested in breakfast and snack ideas...

What can I do next?

Ask her mom what things her daughter can have for breakfast and snacks. She deals with this allergy every day and will be able to spout off a long list of things for you. Mom will probably feel better knowing that you are taking her daughter's allergies very seriously also.

First, I want to commend you for considering your daughter’s friend’s allergies in your planning. I am a multi-level Girl Scout leader and one of our youngest girls has severe egg, nut (all tree nuts), pork & bean allergies (among others) so I know how difficult and overwhelming it can be to plan for a whole group and take these things into consideration when you are not use to doing it on a daily basis. I also know how much the Mom appreciates the extra effort to make her daughter safe.

You can ask the Mom for a list of foods that are OK for her daughter. I had my Mom provide me with a list of “safe” snacks & food. Although she gave me a brand-specific list, she did ask that we ALWAYS check the label as manufactures are constantly “improving” their products and this could result in a change of ingredients. I know that the list she sent me has items that are egg & nut free, but since milk is not one of the things I need to deal with for my Girl Scout, you will have to check the labels for the milk. Here are a few ideas from that list.

Fresh Fruit
Fresh Vegetables
Apple Sauce
Gold Fish Snack Crackers
Cheerios (Regular ONLY), Kix or Froot Loops Cereals (good as a dry snack)
Reduced Fat Nilla Wafers or Mini Nilla Wafers
Rice Krispies Treats (Original or Rainbow only)
Yoplait Go-Gurts
Kraft Marshmallows

2 other things to keep in mind since food allergies (especially nuts) can be serious – even deadly… (1) If you serve any of the allergen ingredients to your family PLEASE make sure you thoroughly clean ALL surfaces that the child could come in contact with while in your house. (2) If anyone eats something that contains an allergen, please have them wash their hands and brush their teeth before coming in contact with the little girl.

My little Girl Scout came in contact with some play equipment after someone had eaten candy bar containing nuts had touched the same equipment and she had a reaction. Thankfully it was not an anaphylaxis reaction since she did not ingest it, but she did swell up and itch for a few hours and that was with 3 treatments of Benadryl!

Good-Luck and God Bless you for going thru the effort to make you daughter’s friend safe and welcome!

It's SO nice of you to take all this into consideration! Most people don't do that at all and in fact feel put out because they might have to not serve peanuts or whatever someone might be allergic to!
My nephew has the same allergies as your daughters friend and my sister has found a lot of things that work for him! You do have to be careful because things that you wouldn't think contain milk actually do (like some brands of sandwich meat and hotdogs) so you have to check the labels and see. I have a great recipe for chocolate cake that is safe for these allergies if you wan it... then she won't have to bring her own! Also they have soy ice cream and "rice dream" that I think is also safe. then she won't have to have something different than everyone else! (the rice dream is really good but I haven't tried the soy)
PM me if you want the recipe for that cake!
Thanks for trying to make your daughters freind not feel excluded and taking her health into consideration!

Cherrybrook Kitchen makes a line of products that are dairy, egg & nut free. Check their website to see stores near you that carry them. Lucy's cookies. Lay's potato chips. Fresh fruits and veggies, hummus. I think it is tyson chicken nuggets that are casein & egg free. Ask her mom what products she uses. You are a good host and mom for doing this.

Aw, that is so sad that she has to bring her own cupcakes to parties :-(

I would go ahead and ask her mom for breakfast and snack ideas. This way you are sure that she won't react.

(My daughter is allergic to cows milk...)

Perhaps you can ask her mom if she drinks an alternate milk (rice milk? Soy? Goat milk) and have a small carton for her? If that is possible, she can use her milk and everyone else can use theirs. For breakfast, you can always do old fashioned oatmeal (made with water not milk) and have milk for everyone to add to their own bowls, brown sugar, cinnamon, raisens, bananas, diced apples for them to mix in. Ham, bacon or sausage. Hash browns or tater-tots. Cook with oil not margarine, since most margarines contain butter fat.

Snacks.... Pillsbury crescent dinner roll dough does not contain milk or egg. You can make them some pigs in the blankets. Check your hot dog brands to make sure you use one that doesn't contain milk, whey or cassien. My 4yo likes these as a special treat; I make small bite size ones (1 inch hot dog pieces, with the hot dog either cut in 1/2s or 1/4th). I'm not sure how old your daughter is or if she needs them small or big.

Jello is an option, as is soy-based pudding. Watermellon is in season. Popsickles. Tortilla chips and salsa. Popcorn with only salt.

Have fun!

They do make really tasty blueberry waffles that are for allergy affected people. My daughter has the same allergies. Oatmeal is always ok with fruit in it to spice things up. Have you tried soy yogurt by Silk, it really tastes similar to regular yogurt.

My son has the same allergies. for breakfast, I like to do sausagepattys (frozen from wal-mart) or fresh. it will say on the package what allergies it has in it. and or bacon and biscuit, you can find some that just contain wheat. snacks, fresh fruit, SOY butter and jelly sandwiches. you can find soy butter at walmart. fresh veggies, plain popcorn if they are old enough.
Good luck! you are VERY nice to do this for her, It is so hard to take your kids to a party and they can't have the same things as everyone else.

Hi - I am also allergic to the same things and find it difficult to attend and have "parties". You could substitute the eggs for applesauce or another fruit puree and make pancakes - buy coconut milk to mix in with the ingredients. Here is a great recipe for pancakes - you could thrown in chocolate chips of blueberries. http://kylie.wordpress.com/2006/03/26/egg-free-dairy-free...

For snacks - you could make or buy soft pretzels. Frozen grapes (freeze for only 3 hours before serving).

Good luck!

I just want to say how wonderful it is that you are putting into consideration your daughter's friend's allergies. I think that is really great! My daughter has egg, peanut/tree nut allergies as well. If there's a Whole Foods nearby, they have peanut fee and egg free cake mix in a box. Since it's summer time, there's lots of fresh fruit in season (watermelon, cherries etc). You could have the girls help you peel/cut the fruit to make fruit salad?

good luck and much kudos to you!

Our daughter has allergies to eggs and peanuts, too (though not the milk...) and we found a great vegan pancake recipe that we love -- we make it every Saturday morning. It uses a carbonated beverage to make the batter fizzy. Yum! (We use ginger ale, even though the recipe says carbonated water). We also use a mix of whole wheat flour (1/3 cup) and all-purpose flour (1 cup), instead of just all-purpose flour. Comes out great!

Pancakes

Ingredients
1 1/3 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup soy milk
1/3 cup carbonated water
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp oil
