hey there,

i have two car seats sitting in my basement that i am clueless how to dispose of. they were in our van when a truck backed into it back in december. they are unusable due to the government checklist on carseat reuse after an accident.

anyone know how to get rid of these? i've heard they need to be destroyed and not just set out on the curb with the trash, is there someplace to take them or do i need to have at them with a hammer after a really stressful day.

thanks!
J.

So What Happened?

i called our local recycling center and they didn't take them so i put them into our trash container this morning and watched the container to make sure no one snatched them out to re-use them. the trash collectors took them away. thanks for the advice! i'm so sorry i missed the aaa suggestion! that would have been awesome.

Check with your local community's recycling program. They may be un-resuable but they may have a place you can take them to. Or at least an idea or two of what to do with them.

A hammer after a stresful day sounds good to me! :) Sorry, I don't know, but I just found that amusing. :)

J.,

Call your local AAA office & see if they will take them. I used to work at AAA In Burnsville, MN and they collected them. They would have a towing company come out and crush them once a year. You do not need to be a AAA member to contact them about this service.

Car seats expire after 6 years or after having been in an accident. You are right about destroying them. If you don't, they can end up being used by someone who doesn't realize the history or age, which is unsafe for the child.

hey mama...

google results just yielded generic info (which i'm sure you already got), but general consensus is cut off straps, remove padding, put plastic in a garbage bag & have at it with a sledgehammer. apparently pieces can't be recycled & there isn't anything truly useful you can do with an "accident-ed" or expired seat.

it sucks, but maybe you'll get some better ideas from other mamas out there.
