What to Do in Public Restrooms When Potty Training?

Hi all: I'm currently potty training my 3 y.o. and it's going well at home. I've been trying to stay close to home more often and/or keep our trips out to 2 hours max. So, tell me what I should do when he needs to pee/poo when we're out and about. He's not tall enough to aim into the potty, either. Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I'm going to try a bit of everything to see what will work. Will be reporting back. :)

So, we first decided to just have him sit the on the potty (tp-lined) with me holding him. That way, we wouldn't end up buying anything we didn't need. It worked! After a few times of not falling in, my 3 y.o. started trusting me and getting relaxed enough to go potty. Thanks everyone!!

Hi J.! My son just turned 2 and has been training for awhile now. What a lot of my friends w/sons suggested is just to put him on backwards for now. It works great for my son and it doesn't spray everywhere, my boy just leans forward and watches it! I agree with purchasing a portable potty for the car, my mom bought us one from One Step Ahead and I've used it for both of my kids! It is hard to go out once you're training, what I did was whenever we would get to a destination, we'd all have to go check the potty out. At least find it, have him try, and if not,do it on the way out. My 3 year old always says she doesn't have to go, but I just tell her to sit and try for a sec so we can go, and she'll fall for it every time! I think I know where every restroom is in the city of Tampa! You'll be back out & about in no time! It went pretty fast for me! Good Luck!

I take some anit bacterial stuff with everywhere, I line the potty with that paper stuff, then I set my son on backward, yes i said backward, facing the wall, and the he leans forward then pees.......as soon as he gets up we use the anti bacterial stuff........now he is tall enough to aim, so yea for tha, but when he wasnt I held him up a littlebit so he could pee standing up instead of sitting down! Hope that helps.......

Hi J.,
They sell fold up potty seats that sit right on top of the regular ones and they have handles. I used this and just carried it in a big ziploc bag. Also, since I was usually standing right behind my son to make sure he didn't touch the toilet, sometimes he would stand on top of my feet, (if I had on sneakers), and that would make him tall enough. Good luck.

I have an extra training potty and would just bring it along with us in the car - made me feel much more "mobile"! If you bring bathroom size trash bags you can line the potty with this for easy disposal. Good luck!

There are a couple of different things you can do. For sitting on the potty, Baby Depot, ToysRus and BabiesRus all sell a folding potty seat that is great to put onto a public toilet seat for your child to sit down on. It is wonderful for potty training and is small enough when folded to fit into a purse or a small diaper bag. It comes in a zip lock bag so is easy to carry. Baby depot also has a small portable potty that uses disposable bags to carry in a car with you. It works quite well especially and is easy to dispose of if you line the bag with a couple of paper towels before the child uses the potty. Just close the bag and fasten and drop into the garbage. I have also let my child stand on my feet which makes them taller to go standing.

I forgot all about potty training in public till now. Its funny, I have a son about to be 5, July 22nd and having another boy due July 31st. Anyway, with my son for #2 he was usually same time everyday, I would try to wait for him to go before leaving home, but out I would cover the seat with T.P I also carried a tiny spray bottle of Clorox and sprayed on and around toilet. For pee I would stand him on the toilet, feet on the seat. We both thought it was funny but it worked!
