I have a 2 month old baby girl with silent reflux. It is getting much better now do to prevacid and switching her formula to soy. My dr had adviced us to try rice in her formula at first, which we tried but I just didn't think it was doing her any good so I took her off. It's been almost a week, she is in such a better mood but I feel she is getting constipated, possibly because of the soy, and maybe the rice she had for a week or so???? If anyone knows anything I could give her that would be safe and effective that would be great. I have heard diluted apple juice???? She has a sensitive tummy and I give her grip water, which works wonders for her gas, but she didn't go poo yesterday and that isn't like her. Any ideas would be great! Thanks :)
-I have also tried baby massage and moving her legs also!

What can I do next?

Sometimes babies can go 5-10 days with out pooping. I had this problem with my girl when she was about 3-4 months old. She didn't poop for 12 days! She was really constipated and she was straining and bled when she tried so hard to push it out. My Dr. ordered me to give her Karo Syrup, the Dark Karo Syrup. 1 TBSP in 2 ounces of Water room temp. or 2 TBSP in 4 ounces of water room temp. If that doesn't work you can give her diluted prune juice, I wouldn't do apple juice though, sometimes apples constipate even more. Just do half and half with the prune juice and water. Ex. 2 ounces of prune juice diluted with 2 ounces of water. Once I started feeding her prunes as her first food, this all stopped...now she poops like 4 times a day! :) Good Luck!

When my daughter was 2 months the same thing happened but for different reasons. My doctor lubed a q-tip and put it in just at the tip where the sphincter would be and gently twisted it around. This stimulates BM and her muscles to contract. She went poop later that day. Make sure you put a safe lube on the q-tip first tho.

I had to start my daughter on formula at 6 wks, and she would once in a while become constipated. To resolve this, I would warm up about 4 oz of water and dissolve a tsp of sugar in it. She would always poop a few hrs after drinking. I'm not sure if sugar would aggravate your daughter's relfux or not.
White grape juice is also supposed to be a good one to start baby on at a young age. Prune juice may help as well, but it makes me very crampy.
I also wanted to say, be careful of sticking anything up the rectum, it is very easy to perforate an infant's if the object is not properly inserted.

Nurse her (give her breastmilk) as much as possible, if not possible, try using the raw milk formula recipe found in Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions www.bulkherbstore.com

Helpful book Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. Digestive Tea for Baby. Folk remedy for treating constipation. 2 cups fresh anise leaves 2 cups fresh mint leaves 2 Quarts filtered water. Just a though also, in the book and in other research I have done, soy is not recommended. from book " Soy based infant formula may adversely affect hormonal development in neonatal infants...the list of toxins in soy formula is long, phytic acid which blocks absorption of minerals, especially zinc,:protease which block digestion of protein and high levels of aluminum, floride, MSG and manganese. The most concern is however, --hormonal effects. Check the book out. I am told that Goats milk is the most Digestable. I am actually looking into making my own milk based formula and if you would like I can let you know how that goes.I hope this wasn't too much or over stepping boundaries.

My daughter had the same problem, and she only had a BM about every 3-4 days. My doctor said it was fine as long as the stools were not hard and she wasn't straining too much when she did go. The doctor said if I gave her any juice at all it should be pear juice, because it is much easier on her stomache at that young age. Around 4-5 months I switched to prune juice, which was very effective. I always dilluted the juice to half water and half juice.

Hi A.,
My daughter was exactly the same, I have digestive problems in my family, so a friend suggested I use a glycerine suppository on her after her bath before bedtime. She has done the same with both her children with great results. It worked really well at getting my daughter back to regular. I did it for three days and on the fourth day when I raised her legs up to do the suppository, she automatically started pooping! Anytime she hadn't had a BM for a day or two and I could tell she was in pain, I would use one. I only did it for a month or two. Now that she is older, 2 1/2, it is easier to give her food that keeps her regular.

PS our pediatrician said it was okay for short periods of time.

Longs and sometimes Safeway have individual bottles of Gerber Apple Prune juice. I use to add equal parts of water and juice in a bottle and give it to my 3 mo old. Also you should know that if it proves to be an on going issue then when you start cereal only give rice cereal for a short period of time, switch to the barley or multi grain as soon as she can. Applesauce and pureed prunes Are two other good poop makers, but she is too young for these right now.
Good luck!

I have an 8 month old daughter that went through the same thing once I stopped breast feeding. I couldn't find a formula that would not make her constipated or bother her stomach! Her Doctor had me put her on a soy as well, which was a big mistake! she didn't have a BM for 4 day's, the doctor told me to give her 2 oz. of apple juice, not diluted. I did and it helped but I definentily took her off the soy and put her on enfamil lipil which is working out fine now. She was 2 months when I stopped breastfeeding and she has a very sensitive stomach, and it was harder for her to digest the formula so I gave her the 2 oz. of apple juice everyday to regulate her and help her go more easily just until she got on track, which took about a week! I'm 23 almost 24 and I have an 8 year old son, he did not have a sensitive stomach like my daughter which I realized is very sad ordeal to go through because you never want to see your baby in any kind of pain! Good Luck!!!
