What to Do for Upcoming Birthday?

I am trying to figure out what to get my children who are turning 4 and 6 on January 30th. Since we just had Christmas, they have TONS of new toys...some of which they haven't even played with much. We are definitely going to take them out somewhere special for the day whether it be the zoo, the aquarium, etc... I am NOT doing a big party for a bunch of different reasons. I am sending a cake/cupcakes to their respective daycare/school. I am thinking of just getting a few small gifts for each of them and calling it good. Any ideas for this age range?

What can I do next?

I'm all about the books for gifts, or craft kits.

I'm a big fan of "experience" gifts. It depends a lot on your child and what they like as far as what you would do. My son got a series of music classes for Christmas that we go to every Saturday morning, just me and him. You could do gymnastics classes, a theater show for your 6 year old, mommy/daughter pedicures or a trip to a local train museum. Whatever you think they would enjoy. If it were me I would do a family thing on the birthday, since they share it, and then make time to do something special with each of them individually as their present. We just have so many "things" that I get tired of the clutter and I want to create memories for them instead.

I love the book idea. My kids loved books. Go to the library, pick out some good books, make a picnic on the floor in the living room and have a read in. we did party's for special birthdays 7yrs old (usually in 1st grade) one in middle school and one when they turned 18. there were others thrown in but for the most part only those. now having said that we always did a family party (grandparents, aunts and uncles and godparents) just not loads of friends. the kids usually had a best friend sleep over on their birthdays

Do you have zoo or aquarium passes? You could buy a pass that way it lasts longer. What about Dinosaur World? One of the Tampa Museum's? Take a drive to Silver Springs and see the glass bottom boats? Lego Land? Downtown Disney and eating at T-Rex would be a treat. You can build a dinosaur too. Happy Birthday!

My neices bday is the 30 th and my sil always took her bowling or to the movies and out to eat. Its usually cold here at that time so she would wait until summer (when its a blazing 110 degrees) to give her a big party. She said that way she has it to look forward to. My bday is Monday and my mom always felt bad that our bday was so close to xmas. She always gave us a big party anyway. Birthdays are special to me and I try to make them great regardless of when it comes around!

We don't typically do big birthday parties either (we did for their 1st bdays). We let each kid decide what they want to do for their day, whether it is bowling, going to a movie theater, chucke e cheese, etc. plus they get to choose whats for dinner - whether we eat at home or go out. Lastly we always bake cupcakes together as a family and yes we let them lick the spoon and bowl and whatever else they can lick that won't make them sick, hehe. We usually do a few small gifts as well.

I hear ya on close to holidays. My yougest dd is a month before Christmas, my son is a week after Christmas and then a month later we have my oldest dd.

Have fun with whatever you decide.

Maybe you can take them to Build-A-Bear (if you have one nearby) and give them a budget to spend. That way they can make any animal they want and buy a few accessories and have one nice special gift from that birthday, instead of a bunch of "stuff". It's a fun experience for the kids and the animals are nice quality.
