OK here is my story. September 06 I had bilateral inguinal hernia repair. The doctor that did the surgery told me that there was no way that the hernia's would come back. Well in the last two weeks I noticed that there was something that wasn't right where I had the surgery. I went to my family doctor just to make sure that there was actually something going on, so that the surgeon didn't think that I doubted his work. My family doctor checked me and says that I have another hernia in the same spot as the one that I had repaired. He says that the muscle has gotten weak around where the plug is. This is what I thought was strange, he tells me that he doesn't recommend that I get it fixed right now. I went by the surgeon's office to pay a bill that I received and talked to the nurse. I told her what my family doc told and she says that it is not a good idea for me to wait. She says that it is just going to continue to tear and get worse. Well I am so undecided about what to do. I am on the verge of changing family doc because this one really doesn't seem to be doing anything for me. There has been more than one occasion that I have gone to the dr and he tells me that he doesn't know what is wrong with me, but here is some medicine for you to take. So I am losing confidence in him. So do I go ahead and go to the surgeon for a consultation or wait? I am so confused. I need some advice. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

If it were me I would go to see the surgeon and then get 2nd opinion from another surgeon. There are some people that are prone to hernias, such as my brother. And if you don't trust your family doctor. ..by all means find a new one.

You need to find out if they put a mesh over the area to prevent it happening again. Also, there was a recall on the mesh they were using a few months ago. If you can, get a 3rd opinion.

Hi D.,

I think it would be a good idea for you to go to your surgeon. He/she should know best what's going on, since he has a history with you.

About the family doctor, I think if you don't have much confidence in the one you have now, it would be a good idea to shop around. Doctors provide a service, and they need to be up to your standards. I bet there's one out there for you that will be great!

Good luck!

I have had two inguinal hernia repairs. the second time my doctor put in a mesh lining I guess. That was 11 years ago I have been fine ever since. I have heard that it can be dagerous to let them go they can become constricted and block bowels etc. Which is dagerous. I would get it fixed but find another surgeon. It would not hurt to have another doctor check it out. I do know that ever since I have had kids I sear It is back but everytime I get it checked out (there is a lump) they tell me it is scar tissue. My ob looked 2years ago for me and said there was not a thing there. I totally trust him.
