I am looking for suggestions on sources you would turn to to find a trustworthy and professional carpenter. I f you are new to an area and would like to replace your windows in your home, or add on a deck or a room, or just update something, where should I look first, the newspaper, the phone book . . . i want to get several estimates for several projects, not sure which I am doing first. Any suggestions are of great help. Thanks

I would also suggest Servicemagic.com. How it works is.... you go and enter in that you want a carpenter. They'll give you a list of all the carpenters they have signed up (including their ratings, reviews, etc). Servicemagic sends your information to all the carpenters, and the carpenters call YOU.
My husband is a chimney sweep, and our business is listed with Servicemagic. It has worked out pretty well, because all our customers have given us 5-star reviews. HOWEVER, the most annoying thing is that we are charged for every potential lead, every person that clicks for chimney sweeps *whether or not they were actually serious*. So please keep that in mind.
You can also ask on here, just specify your area specifically.
The local Chamber of Commerce may have a listing of businesses that are members. Ask your neighbors and co-workers. Before you hire check with the Better Business Bureau and the State Attorney General's Office and ensure that there are no complaints against the vendor.

I have used servicemagic.com several times and I have always had really good luck.
You might want to talk to your neighbors and see if they can suggest anyone to you. Normally that helps me.
Stop at your local fire station and ask them if any of the guys are carpenters or they can recommend one. Most firemen have second careers and many are carpenters, electricians, roofers and plumbers. Most are hard working and trustworthy.
My Dad often has some of the Amish folks in our community do that kind of work. Their work is always good and their work ethic is amazing. They don't waste time! If there is an Amish community near you, you might look into it. Here, they do quality work and at a much better price than most. I am sure there are lost of qualified people in your area. I just thought I would throw in a different option.
