What Probiotics Do You Use for Your Baby/child? Does It Matter?

First timer trying a probiotic for our 5 week old. I bought FloraBaby at a health food store. It says it can be used from newborns on up. That it mixes easily with water, milk or formula. And that it has 5 viable strains of bacteria.

Has anyone used this before? What were the results? Is there another variety you like better and why?

Thanks Moms!

My kids both take probiotics. First we used Udo's, but then switched to another brand that was cheaper. Might be the same as the first lady suggestion. My 18 month old has only been sick 3 times ever. My 4 year old has been in preschool for a year now and other than a cold here and there, he has only brought home one nasty virus. They've only had 1 very mild cold since March, so I think they work. We also optimize our Vit D3. The boys get 2000 IU a day. I take 6000.

Oh, and Mommy R, I would continue to use them forever not just when your child is on antibiotics.

I just starting using FlorastaKids for my 15month old and it seems to be doing its job. I just put in right in his milk in the am and pm. He has been pooping a lot more since using it and I am not sure if that is a good thing or not :) His ENT recommended we use it while he in on antibiotics.

Hi! Me again! After I saw this next question of yours I went and found the piece of paper in my daughters health folder where the doctor wrote down the names of the probiotics that she recommended to us. She said either Culturelle or Lactinex granules. That was about a year and a half ago so other great products may have come out since then, since probiotics are becoming more popular, that are easier for the parents to give to their kiddos. Most of the products are probably about the same however, Lactinex is the one we chose that we had good luck with. We split each packet up into 4 doses and gave it to her in her bottles. I will say it was a little bit of a pain in the rump to split up the granules. I would have to pour out the packet and "cut" it up into four close to even parts. No need to be perfectly exact since she would be getting the whole packet eventually. (I always joked with my hubby that I felt like a coke head getting my drugs ready. Never did that so I'm not sure if that's the truth but what I was doing looked just like what I've seen on TV. I swear it did!) Then I would have to find a way to store the unused granules that I portioned out. I had a neat little system of using plastic bathroom cups that, once filled with the granules, could be stacked and then put back in the fridge where they are stored. That way I could "cut" up several packs at a time.

So ya, it was a pain and if you can find a different, more mom friendly version I would recommend that. But if you can't, go for the Lactinex. The extra work is still worth the benefits.

Oh, and to Mommy R.-The extra pooping was normal and a good thing. That means their little bodies are digesting better as long as the poop was "normal". What ever that is. :-)

Smiles,
J.

I use FloraStor for Kids also. Available at Walgreens behind the counter at the pharmacy. My son got Rotavirus (even though he was vaccinated) and he used the Florastor, and the doctor said it was the mildest case of the virus she had ever seen. I think it's definitely worth it.

We use Florastor as well! I really like it, since my 16 month old has been on for the last 4 months, she's had nothing more than a cough and drippy nose... never got sick like I did!!!
