so last night i had a banana before i went to bed. My 2 month old was up every hour and a half to 2 hours. This also happened when I had a glass of milk for dinner one night. Is there any other foods that i should avoid before going to bed. Also how long does it take for what you eat/drink to affect your breastmilk.

HI Kimberly,
I wouldn't conclude that you can't eat bananas or milk just because the baby had one fussy night. It was probably a coincidence.
Best,

Every baby is different in what affects them. With my first, chocolate and leafy vegetables (greens, lettuce, broccoli) tended to give my little one gas if I ate it. I stayed away from those with my second one. I have also heard that cheese will make them gassy or upset their stomaches. As far as how long it takes for what you eat/drink to affect your breastmilk, last I heard it was 24 hours. That changes every so often so maybe someone else has more up-to-date information.

Sounds like a typical 2 month old. Maybe you should feed her a little more at each feeding time. She may be waking up hungry. If she is only getting the 1st part of your milk and not the filling part (which is the middle) she is bound to be hungry again. (Can't remember the names) Also, there are no foods to avoid when you are breastfeeding. What you eat does not affect your baby. I would talk to a lactation conultant for more info.

Hi,

I am a Lactation Consultant in Sacramento. :)

There is no need to avoid foods. Your baby is only 2 months old and her waking at night about every 2 hours is 100% normal. They do go through growth spurts and sometimes they simply need to eat more. :) It is normal even for a 12 month old to need to nurse every 2 hours at night sometimes. Our society is just so hooked on getting that kid to sleep through the night that we forget that they have little tummies and are growing VERY Rapidly the first 2 yrs that they NEED to eat more frequently than we adults... :)

Relax - enjoy your meals - enjoy your baby. :)

I wouldn't assume that what you ate kept her up. I have never heard of bananas causing a problem. Usually it's gassy or spicy foods. She could be going through a growth spurt, have a gas bubble, etc.

I found that I needed to avoid broccoli, spicy (like chili and hot spiced foods), and horseradish (on meat and in cheese). That last one was a terrible. The entire family was up all night. I loved it post-preg... horseradish cheddar, but the baby screamed all night long.

Hi Kimberly,

Jaye S. is 100% right. She is still a newborn and needs to eat when she is hungry to help her fuel her growing body and brain.
I remember Thatcher ate every hour sometimes. Luckily I enjoyed nursing. But I feel your pain if you are tired and want sleep. Maybe you could bring her into bed with you on nights she is eating frequently, then just put her back early in the morning so she wakes in her own bed.

I think that you don't have to hold back from eating anything, I think that breastmilk is blood based, not food based if I remember correctly?
My son is a big boy (9.5) at birth, and is now a whopping 27 pounds at 13 months. He STILL gets up at least once a night for a full 8-10 ounce bottle of milk because he's not able to make it thru the night not feeling hungry. It's okay. Kids sleep patterns change, 2 mths old is still trying to figure her system out and once she does....it will change again. I found the easist for me was to co-sleep and just sort of roll over when he was hungry. I managed to figure out how to nurse on my side ha ha, I even slept thru a few times....
It will take your daughter at least a year to a year and a half to get into a regular sleep schedule from my experience. But as long as you don't try and force it on her and let her figure it out one sleepless night at a time, it is worth it. My older son is 2 1/2 and he sleeps the night thru, 8:30 - 7:30 in a big boy bed and has since he was 18 mths old.

they're all different.

good luck

Was she fussy? Or just up? If she wasn't fussy, then you don't need to avoid any specific foods. A 2 month old being up every 2 hours could mean she's going through a growth spurt and is cluster feeding to catch up and increase your milk supply. Unless she was fussy, I'd call this normal.

When I ate peanut butter and my daughter got really fussy from that, I called the doctor's and they told me it takes 3 days to fully get the food out of your milk. Not sure of other foods to avoid. Good luck.
