What Length Dress?

My brother is getting married in the fall, a fairly large and formal evening wedding. What would you wear to this? A floor length dress? Knee length? Strapless? Sleeves? I'm thinking floor length strapless in a dark color like burgundy or navy, nothing shiny or flashy. But is this appropriate for the sister of the groom? I usually wear the typical "little black dress" to weddings, but want to go a step above that this time. I know there will be people in both knee length and floor length dresses, so I will be acceptable with either. Just looking for opinions on what you all think...

Thanks!

rather than judge this by the event (since you already know that both options are fine), i'd decide by what style is the most flattering on you.
i look really good in long skirts.

I think it depends on the venue and the bridal party. You don't want to outshine the bridesmaids, so I would wait until you see what they are wearing and then just make sure that you don't look as formal as one of them. But really, either length and type of top should be fine, and your colors sound nice but those are popular wedding party colors, so make sure neither one is a bridal party color.

It all depends on the formality of the wedding itself. I'd ask your brother for details about the venue, etc. to make sure you wouldn't be overdressed or underdressed.

Agree with those that say talk to your SIL. Even going based on what the invitation says is iffy, because the standards for all of those terms--and how much people adhere to the standards--seems to vary widely by region. Plus guests and family are different - I don't see guests in full-length very often, but mom's all the time... but my knowledge is a decade old from the wrong city anyway ;-)

I'm assuming by evening you mean 5 or later? I think that a strapless floor length dress would be perfect. I actually wish that more of our wedding guests had dressed a little nicer, more like that.

Talk to your brother - or ask the bride-to-be if you know her (or even if you don't). Find out what the bridal party are wearing, and that will help you make a decision.

Evening can be a lot of things...
4:00 Cocktail length
7:00 Floor length

Anything goes today, but check with your future SIL because you will be in all of the pictures and may end up doing a reading or helping guests find their seats, etc. You want to make sure that you aren't dressed more formally than the mothers and that you don't clash with the maids!
