We are hanging up a therapy swing for my son in our basement. We are using a steel beam in the basement ceiling. We have all of the right hanging equipment and the swing but need some advice about drilling the hole. We will be inserting a forged steel eye bolt into the hole. The installation instructions tell use to drill the 1/2" hole through the flange of the I-beam or web of the H-beam but say nothing about the kind of drill or drill bit to use. Thank you in advance for your input

I would recommend going to your local home hardware store and asking them. More than likely they will know what they are talking about and will have the drill bit that your husband will need.

1/2" Carbide drillbit.

There's no need for a welder. Trust me.

If it is indeed steel, depending on how thick it is, drilling may be nearly impossible with a special drill. I want to say that you need a hardened carbide tip in addition. You may need to hire a welder to cut a hole with a torch. However, be careful about any possible structural ramifications!

I would agree that you should inquire at your local hardware store. But I won't assume that you have to have your husband do the work. You are probably more than capable of doing this. Regardless of who does the work, make sure it can support the amount of weight you need..especially if it is intended for your son. Always better safe than sorry.
