My step-father keeps telling me to give my toddlers Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) when they have a cold, and it helps them. My question is I am not a person who is familiar with natural meds. Any of you momma's have any experiance with this stuff?

What can I do next?

We use it in out home. It is simply food and is perfectly safe for infants as well as toddlers. It actually builds up the immune system so the body fights off the cold, flu or whatever on it's own. My girls used to tell people their mommy had the medicine that Mary Poppins gave Jane and Michael. In liquid form the elderberry is very tasty....No side effects. Unlike standard medicine it doesn't create an environment for other illnesses to attack. Before synthetic chemicals were invented, this would have been the medical doctor's prescription.

Hope this helps.

LOL! This post reminded me of the line from Monty Python's Holy Grail: "Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries." I always wondered what were elderberries - b/c of your post I now know. Thank you, I will be trying it out.

My thoughts are good :) I use it whenever we are going to be in a crowd and cooties are around. Also use it when I see symptoms start. Great stuff.

If you're speaking of the syrup, it's yummy and rich in flavonoids and antioxidants, which can boost your general health. It also has a reputation for stimulating the immune system and fighting viral infections like the flu. There are also some cautions about using it during certain viral infections: http://factoidz.com/fight-the-flu-with-sambucus/

Because of the high sugar content of the syrup, I haven't personally used it enough to get a sense of whether it actually works. I didn't know about it when my daughter was little.

That is a homepathic remedy. Don't confuse "natural" with homeopathic, or vice-versa. Anyway, "natural" can mean a lot of things.

Read up on how homeopathic remedies are made (diluted down to nothing, essentially), and then consider if you want to spend your money on them.

It won't hurt him, anyway.
