I was looking for a sugar ant remedy without having to call an exterminater. Anybody have one? These guys are the only bug problem we have been having in the house.

Summary

Most popular sugar ants remedy is to place a bait like Terro Ant Killer. While some people suggest to clean the trail they make with vinegar. They put a chemical down for the next ant to follow so when you put the vinegar it removes the trail. There is also something that you sprinkle around the perimeter of your home outside that will keep them from coming in. Some use cornmeal, since ant cannot digest it and they died, so it is cheap and not toxic. If you're into real pesticides you can buy a Ortho bug spray that comes in a container much like what the exterminators have.

Yes, I do!!! Any cheap cheap toothpaste will draw them and mix it with plain old boric acid. I just spread the toothpaste in an out-of-the way place that wouldn't be seen by people and sprinkled the boric acid over the toothpaste and I haven't seen one since. Good luck

Hi J.,

I hate chemicals too. We use natural stuff to rid our home of bugs. One thing we found that really works on ants is to get some ZOTE soap, grate it, mix it with water and spray or pour on the problem. It kills fireants, sugar ants, etc. ZOTE is hard to find. Wal-Mart used to sell it, but now they don't. It comes from Mexico, so if you have a Mexican Market, look there. In San Antonio, I hear that the Culebra Market carries it.

If you have fleas or tics, use Diatomaceous Earth (DE) from a feed store. It is a fine dust (do not breath it in) of diatoms from the ocean. It is not a chemical. You can mix it with water and spray, or you can use it like 7 Dust. It won't hurt animals, etc. It works because it is like finely ground glass and it cuts thru their protective coating and they dehydrate and die. It is actually better than having a pest control company spray. As for roaches, use boric acid powder.

Did you know that IVORY soap kills fleas? If your dog has fleas, there is no need to buy a special flea soap. Just use IVORY. They all die and go down the drain.

I am an expert when it comes to sugar ants...well, ants, in general!!!
DO NOT spray sugar ants. DO NOT use powder and such.
This will cause their colony to divide and multipy. The more you spray...the more division, the more ants!!!
Go to Home Depot, Walmart, Lowes...Buy Terro Ant Killer. It is in a little orange box. You cut squares out of the box, drop a drop or two of the liquid on the square. These ants will come out in the hundreds, eat up the bait....and so long charlie!!! No more ants!!! I have used this in two of my houses and have suggested it to many friends, of which, it works for them too. Good News is, after you use this...you'll never see them again...(the ants, I mean!!)

Good Luck!!

Margaret :)

Try sprinkling some boric acid in their path. I would put it in the seam of the counter and the wall. Orkin uses boric acid when they come to your house. You can find it at any grocery store or walmart, or target.

Hi J.,

I have the same problem with those stinkers in my pantry. I came across a would be remedy when watching a version of a Jane Austin novel on TV. The old know it all lady said to hang green sage on either side of the pantry. I couldn't find fresh sage so I bought some rubbed sage in the spice section at the store. I poured it into little bowls an put them in on various shelves in my pantry. I am happy to say that the ants have moved out of the pantry, but not out of my kitchen. Maybe I'll make a sage tea and spray that around. talc baby powder works temporarily too.

You may want to get it checked out. The "sugar ants" that I thought we were being plagued with ended up being that new strand of "raspberry" ants. They appear immune to most remedies and exterminators are still trying to get a handle on it.

I know this sounds crazy honestly I did not believe it at first but W-D 40 will get rid of ants. The key is to find where they are coming in from and spray it there and along their paths. They will probably find a new way in in a few days so just do it again. When I had them it did not take long to completely get rid of them. It is also a really inexpensive solution.

I have used vinegar. Just wipe down surfaces with vinegar. It clears their scent trails and that seems to encourage them to leave.

My exterminator told me to get boric acid and mix with peanut butter. Then cut a straw into 1 inch pieces and put a small amount of the mix in it. Put a straw on the floor, on each shelf, etc.
Works great and is not harmful to anyone.
Boric acid can be bought just about anywhere and is very cheap.
As the weather gets hotter outside, the ants come in more.

Hi J.,
I had this same problem too when we recently moved. My Grandma recommended white vinegar to repel them. I mixed it with a little bit of water and wiped down the counters with it and even poured some down the drain and it worked! It was bad too, they infested our pantry so we took everything out and salvaged what we could, wiped it down and after about two days they were gone. I have also heard that Terro is the only poison that works and it works well. Good luck!
