What Is the Best, Cheapest, and Safest Way to Have a Deck Built?

We moved into a house with a very crappy deck and homemade roof over it. It was poorly made, and when we hired a handyman to take the roof off since it was pouring water into our skylights, he ruined our regular roof, and we ended up needing to get a complete new roof on the entire house. Needless to say, we are very nervous about finding a new company to build a new deck because of our previous bad experience. We have had many companies come out for estimates already, but all of them have said that it would cost $20-$25,000 for the deck and roof which is a bit too pricey for us. The prices do not even include the permits and drawings needed. Does anyone have some advice on how we can keep the cost down, but still have a safe, good deck built? There is so much red tape involved with the city it seems! Thank you!

Perhaps get many estimates for them separately? My neighbor is getting her roof replaced for under $5K (2K sq. ft. 2-story home).. so, $15K+ sounds like a lot for the deck... Will it save you $$ to tear the deck down yourself? Check Craigslist too... with the economy the way it is, you should be able to get some good deals... :) Good luck!!

Many years ago-my husband and I needed a new deck. We spent $400 at Sears-at the time-and bought great tools-then we planned the deck- bought the materials-it's all formula-and built it ourselves. you can do it-if you can read-you can do anything!

My husband built ours last year too, with Trex decking material that we can walk on with bare feet and never needs to be stained. I was shocked when we got the quotes for having it built by someone. Luckily we have a great neighbor who helped a lot, and they had it done within a few weeks. It is incredibly sturdy and turned out great- wouldn't know it was a DIY project. If you do need to hire someone, ask them for references and call previous customers and make sure they were satisfied.
