Ladies, I run an Inhome daycare, and there is this one little boy that comes Thursdays and Fridays. Lately he has been going back and forth between mom and dads house since they have joint custody. To say the least I am worried about this little boy. He is 2.5yr old, and he seems to have lost alot of weight since starting this go between of the parents' homes. I weighted him yesterday and he is only 24 lbs. Does anyone know what the average weight for little boys is? Im really worried about this little boy. Thanks ladies.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have taken all your advices... Grandma came to pick him up tonight, and I had mentioned it to her. I did explain to her that every couple weeks the kids get a kick out of taking their height measurements and weight measurements against my wall where my daughter does hers. I had mentioned that 2 weeks ago her grandson was 32lbs, and just yesterday when we weighted in, he was only 24lbs. I had mentioned it to his mom this morning and she had just shrugged at it as nothing, but that I was extremely worried about him especially since he is hardly eating this week. Grandma was very upset about it since she has been noticing the same, and informed me that she will be making sure he gets in to see his ped right away to find out whats happening, and also talking to his mother to find out whats going on at home. Thanks ladies for your help.

Poor little guy to have to go through so much at a young age. My 2.5 yr old weighs 36 lbs, but he is in the 90-95% for height and weight. I hope that helps and I hope that at least coming to your house will create some sability in his little life.

I am not exactly sure what the average weight is for a 2.5yr old, but my son is 2.5 and only weighs 21 lbs. The doctor's aren't worried about him, but have mentioned to me that he is small due to genetics. I am very small and so is my husband. My other son is 4yrs and only weighs 29 lbs. Both are tiny, but very healthy. I hope this little boy is okay! Best of luck!!

That's a really difficult question to answer because it depends on his height, his growth history......that's why the pediatricians use growth charts from birth to determine if there are issues.

Here's an example of the growth chart for his age:
http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/growthcharts2/l/blboysbirt...

We have neighbors who have a 3 year old who weighs 26 lbs, and his 20 month-old brother is 31 lbs. Different kids, different builds, different metabolisms. Both are as healthy as can be.

If you have a relationship with one of the parents (or both), I'd recommend saying something about being worried that he's so tiny (you can be non-invasive by saying he doesn't eat much in your care). If they don't really care and blow you off, I'd go to the county and see if a case worker needs to get involved. I would have for it to come to that, but the child's best interest is at the heart of it.

However, I'd really make sure to talk to the parents first and understand his medical history (HIPPA laws prevent you from calling the doctor and discussing it) before getting the government involved.

Good luck.

really depends on his height and ethnicity - hispanic boys can be a little smaller and lighter - some caucasians can be a bit plump, there has to be other reasons for your concerns - what are they?

Hi T., I am sure that my son was about that weight when he was 2.5 . He may have had a growth spurt which made him seem to slim down.
I wouldn't be worried unless his eating habits have drastically changed.

I am glad that you are concerned, though. Too many kids don't have anyone to worry and stand up for them. Keep on monitoring him!

Well being 2.5 he's prob started his picky won't eat anything phase. So that may be effecting his weight. If you are that worried speak to his parents about it , ask um if he's having trouble adjusting , then suggest giving him pediasure or ensure plus protein.

Im not sure how everyone else will answer but when my now 9 year old was in kindergarten he only weighed between 30-35 pounds. He just was a mover and we couldn't keep the weight on him. He was in like the 10% percentile for his age. But he ate just fine. I really dont know what to say. If you are very concerned I would maybe call a dr. and see what they think, but yes he might just be becoming more active and starting to drop the baby weight. On the flip side I do have a 19 month old that is now weighing 25 pounds. So every child is different. Sorry this probably confused you more then helped. :)

Not sure of the average weight of a 2.5 year old boy. I think it would depend on his height as well as the stature/weight/height of his parents as well. Are they tall and thin? That could be the reason.

My daughter is in the 90% for height (2.5 years old) and weighs 30 lbs. She's always been high for height but lower (25-50%) for weight.

If you noticed a DROP in weight, I would mention it to the parents. It could be stress related.

24 lbs is on the lite side. My 2.5 yr old weighs 39 lbs but he is a very sturdy large boy. I would mention it to his parents and keep weighing him weekly. It may just be that he is going thru a lot of emotions and not eating enough. We recently moved and my son went thru 4 weeks of being a super picky eater and eating half the amount of food he used to eat. As long as he doesn't seem abused or starving when he is with you, I would try to just give him lots of love and encourage him to eat the yummy food you prepare. Also, my best friends son is 3 months younger than my son and is very lite (weighs 22 lbs). He is very well taken care of but has trouble keeping his weight up.

You are a kind soul for doing daycare. I do not know what I would do with out my daycare provider. She makes my life possible as I am a single mom who works full time. Keep up the good work and know that you are making a difference in child's lives.

Has his behavior changed in a drastic way? Does he appear clean and well rested? My middle son was very tiny, but always was at about the 10th percentile until he hit puberty. If the boy has suddenly dropped weight, it can be a number of things. Do the parents agree on a set schedule of meals and bedtimes? It is very important to do so for the little guy, so he has some sense of normalcy and routine. If they don't, that alone can cause him weight loss/ gain. Have the parents raised any red flags to you? Go with your gut feeling. Please voice your concerns to the parents, and see how they respond. Tell them you are concerned for their little one because you love him and go from there. There could be a medical issue, or an emotional issue. If after you have spoken to the parents and they are unconcerned or defensive, only then would I report it. Unless of corse, you see any bruises, or obvious lack of care.

My 17 month old boy is around 25-26#. At his 15 month check up he was 50% for weight although he seems chunky to me.

I agree with the other posters and mention his weight loss to the parents. Maybe ask them how he is eating at home and if they would like for you to feed him more/ different foods while he is in your care. Pediasure does work wonders. My daughter didn't gain any weight for a few months and since she was already on the smaller side the dr said to give her pediasure once a day. Sure enough, at the next well baby checkup she had gained 3 lbs and was in the 25 to 50 percentile instead of 5th to 10th
