K.K.
Something like this might make more places safe to iron, and it looks wider than a standard board.

I may have to get one =)
I have a lot of white linen table cloths and napkins to iron, and an ironing board isn't even wide enough to iron the whole napkin without having to turn it. There has to be a netter way.........
*glass coffee table not an option, haha, found out the hard way <----- i'm such a goober.

I have done a lot of ironing on a towel on top of the washer.
I would think any surface that is large and flat but you must put some padding down, like a fleece throw would work, and then a sheet over that. You can't iron on hard surfaces, it just doesn't work.
Thick towel or folded blanket works well for this. Place them on a flat surface (the floor) and you're all set!
You can use any table but you need to pad it. When I was little we didn't have an ironing board, my mom used our kitchen table with a thick blanket on top. I still do that occasionally when I have something big to iron.
Good luck.
I put a towel on top of the deep freeze.
How about the kitchen table? Actually you can use any solid hard surface, just put down some type of padding like a large bath towel or an old sheet thats been folded a few times.
The good thing about the ironing board is that it is well padded. I've ironed on a table, but I use a lot of padding on it. A thick blanket might work, with a sheet on top of it, held tightly around the sides by clothespins. But the idea is to have a surface that can withstand the heat and steam. I know there is a special fabric - I've seen it at fabric stores.
I have a small ironing pad that I sometimes use when we're traveling, although I don't use it as much now since many motels supply ironing boards. Usually these pads are pretty small, but I found a couple of web sites for you. Maybe you can make a pad big enough for your needs.

Sorry about your coffee table....
kitchen table, counter top. put a towel underneath. works like a champ
Not sure about 'best' but I use my carpet and sometimes a towel. But I'm lazy and don't want to go into my basement to get my ironing board. But I hate to iron...so if that means I re-dry something a few times in order to prevent that, I will :)
Kitchen table with a towel underneath. That is the best way I was able to iron some curtains. I hate ironing but the dryer did a horrible job getting out those wrinkles. Got rid of those things pretty quickly.
card table or a clean floor I have even Ironed my tablecloths along the kitchen cabinets but the hardwood floor has been the best place I have ironed mine cause it is big enough
