What Happened to Saturday Morning Cartoons?

My daughter is 5. This is our first Saturday having basic only cable (channels 2-26, pretty much only local channels). There are no cartoons on! I can remember getting up on saturday morning and laying on the couch watching cartoons on tv. I loved it. Normally we would have Disney on, but now that we don't have Disney we aparently don't have saturday morning cartoons. Very sad.

Sure, she could put in a dvd or stream something on netflix, but we should be able to watch them on regular old tv. When did this stop??

EDITED to add: PBS has cartoons every morning except Sat.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

At 8am we found cookie jar on CBS and she likes the mystery cartoon. In my area, on PBS, there are no cartoons on Sat morning. I guess if she wants to watch something other than that on Saturday's she will have to give up snuggle time in my bed and watch a movie in her room.

I miss cable, but not the bill!!

I think Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon are what happened to them. It's hard for regular channels to get any viewers on Saturday mornings when other channels show them 24/7.

That being said, do you get PBS? I seem to recall our PBS showing cartoons in the mornings, every morning. (well, maybe not Sunday, we usually arent around first thing in the morning, so I dont know about then)

You know what I miss?

Fraggle Rock
Darkwing duck
Ducktales
Talespin
Smurfs
Snorkles
Scooby Doo
Chip and Dale rescue rangers (found volumes 1 and 2 on DVD at Walmart!)

Some (smurfs and snorkles and scooby doo) you can find on Boomerang, but what good does that do if you only have basic cable? And there are morning cartoons, but they start at 5 am and only last until 8 or so! I ain't getting up that early!

We need to start a petition to bring back old school saturday morning (until at least lunchtime!) cartoons!!!

It stopped with the explosion of cable channels, many of which have a special focus (kids, nature, history, whatever). The networks couldn't keep up because the advertising dollars weren't there.

i know i wish that pbs followed suit on the weekends, i actually enjoy curious george, and my baby is obsessed with calliou (youd think he was justin beiber, lol)

but i have it on cbs right now and its called "cookie jar t.v.", its not nearly as educational as pbs programming, but its not anime(barf)

****and speaking of pbs cartoons, ive learned SO much about animals from "cat in the hat" and how awesome is "word world"? what a neat idea that is!

I don't know...CBS has Busytown Mysteries and a bunch of other cartoons we don't like....ABC has Emporer's New School and That's So Raven (not a cartoon, I know) and NBC has Turbo Dogs, Shelldon, and a bunch of others...CW has Sonic, Dragon Ball Z Kai, etc...and PBS has all their regular cartoons.

That being said...I'd also like to say...WHAT HAPPENED TO SAT MORNING CARTOONS?!?!? The above mentioned is a bunch of blahhhhhh (besides PBS, but we get them all week) that no one wants to watch.

I remember Sat mornings from when I was young...ah...yay....:) My fav. were Cartoon Express, Muppet Babies, Peewee's Playhouse, Ghostbusters, and Quack Attack...

I watched PBS this morning: Sesame Street, Curious George, The Cat in the Hat... made her turn it off before Super Why and Dinosaur train... we only watch on the early morning (6-8 or sometimes 9 depending when we get up) though, so I don't know what on later in the day.
If you have an HDTV hooked up to an over the antenna make sure that you rescan your channels on a semi-regular basis.
Many channels have "subchannels" with different progamming. Here we get like 5 different PBS programs and now even have sprout... without paying a penny for cable!

I loved Saturday mornings when I was a kid! I don't know who decided we needed nothing but news and infomercials on Saturday mornings, but I wish they would bring back the 'toons!

There are so many cable channels just for kids, the main networks were losing money so they now use that time for things more people watch.. It is all based on money..

Also DVD's, VHS.. and with Netflix, you can get as many animated DVDs to watch each month as you want.. And you can control what your child watches.

Saturday morning cartoons have been gone for at least 10 years. Its a bummer that they are no longer enjoyed by kids bc of cable and dvds. I have bought a lot of my favs on dvd bc I still enjoy watching cartoons every once in awhile. I remember when bugs bunny started at 8am-10am. and watching the flinstone kids and scooby doo. Now its all CGI no more hand drawings. I guess its cheaper to have one person on a computer than several drawing and painting. Also remember how saturday evenings were family night tv? and after school specials god i feel old now. lol

We don't get anything that doesn't come in with the little box-thing (which I don't know how to use, so I never try). That's why we have our old favorites on DVD and let the kids watch those when they watch something (Garfield and Friends, He-Man, Transformers, Danger Mouse, TMNT, Busy Town, GI Joe, and my newest personal acquisition: King Arthur and the Knights of Justice). We're hoping to add some of our other favorites to the rotation like Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales, Tailspin, Darkwing Duck and such. I want Gargoyle's but my kids are too young. :) I know that wasn't helpful with your question. We have sometimes caught Sesame Street on Saturday mornings, but not since our tv switched to the new thing and I don't really care for all the new muppets or people.
