only 1 mo old is not too late to try re-lactating; it would be tough, and not as high a chance for success as if she were nursing from the beginning, but it could be worth a try.
having said that, to help prevent food allergies for a babe so young, it's best to avoid dairy and soy proteins in formula - even small amounts can manifest an allergy in suseptible little ones (like my son). trouble is, you don't know your child is suseptible until it's too late! if i were your friend & could not nurse, i would go with neocate infant with dha & ara right off the bat. it's on the expensive side, but i got several cases for my firstborn on ebay.
the difference it made for my baby boy was worth the expense; we would have gone w/o cable, lights, new clothes, car & phone if we had to -- it's that big of a deal. knowing then what we know now, we would have joined an amish nudist colony if it meant we could have used neocate from the get-go!
