What Foods Can Cause Gas?

I am breastfeeding my 5 week old daughter. I have breastfed all 4 of my children, but this is new.
She has GAS. Not spit-up gas - but back-firing, diaper blow-out gas.
It seems to hurt her at times. She'll scruntch up and scream, then make a VERY audible toot, then go right back to sleep. Other times she just toots and toots and is what my husband calls "the fart factory" (lovely name, huh?) :)
What could I be eating that is causing this???????
I have cut out anything spicy, fried, fibery veggies, and most dairy...
What else can cause gas???
My poor little girl is miserable!!!

What can I do next?

It might be a dairy allergy. I would cut out your dairy intake for 4 weeks and see it that makes a difference. And alot of children with dairy issues also have soy allergy as well.

As for gas, onions, apricots, eggs, beans, apples as well as the foods that you mentioned already.

And you might look into finding a good probiotic for you to take and see if that eliminates some of your issues.

i would use the mylicon & also check her latch to make sure she is not ingesting air when she sucks.

Hello A.,

I see you've cut out things from your diet...have you added any new? I noticed that my daughter would get really bad gas when I drank non-alcoholic bubbly drinks...like sparkling apple/grape juice. Also, do you have any foods that affect you or our husband in particular? or maybe even your parents or inlaws? our kids are sort of mini-US... and I think that sometimes some of those intolerances show up sooner than we realize.
do you take digestive enzymes? do you take pro-biotics? anyways, keep looking because something is not right. and I wouln't take the proverbial 'oh, she'll grow out of it' either. good luck! ~C.~

Also big gas causers, broccoli and cauliflower, cabbage, coleslaw. My youngest son did this too. I gave him Mylicon and I would suggest that for her as well. Another thing I used that was my life saver is called "Gripe Water". It is a homeopathic mixture of herbs that helps with colic, gas, stomach upset, etc. and it was wonderful for my son. You can find it at Walgreens or CVS in the baby supply section. You give her some in a dropper before feeding her. It really worked for us.

You've identified the biggest culprits - dairy was the big issue with my daughter, as well as onions. But you keep a food diary and see if there is something that recurs regularly or if you notice times when she is worse than others and try to back into it that way.

Good luck!

It sounds like you have cut out most of the usual suspects. I would just try giving her a little Mylicon with every feeding for a while. :)
