Hello ladies,
I have a charming 17 month old. My husband and I have rented a small cabin at a campground next weekend. Does anyone have advice on what kind of foods that I should bring? We will have access to a very small refrigerator but I don't know what nutritious yet easy foods I should bring that my daughter would like. Also, if anyone has any other camping advice...I'm all ears!

When we go camping I like to bring nutrtious grains that won't spoil like granola bars and whole grain crackers and dry cereal. Since yoyu have a refrigerator fresh fruits would be good. AF

I always bring our normal food, to some degree. It is much easier to make something ahead of time then pop it in the oven (assuming the cabin has a full kitchen). You can even cook it at home and just warm it up there. I'm thinking a casserole or lasagne or something like that. If you are only staying for the weekend, you could get away with hot dogs and sandwiches, too. It's up to you. I bring yogurt for the boys and peanut butter crackers. Another idea is just to stop by KFC and get a bucket of chicken to share as needed. It really depends on what you prefer. I've done each of these things! ;)

Don't forget bug spray and sun screen. Depending on where the cabin is, also bring a sweater/light jacket. Even if it's warm during the day, the mountains get cooler at night.

I have also learned my lesson on bringing too many toys. It's not worth it to haul the whole toy box there just to keep her busy. I have found that my boys get more interested in the new surroundings and leave most of the toys in the bag. Even at 17 months, she's sure to find a lot of new things to play with... rocks, sticks, etc. I don't think that's exclusively a boy thing. :) You can show her how to make marks - draw in the dirt with a stick... that's sometimes as good as a coloring book.

My best advice is to plan your meals and bring only what you need. Over packing is a real drag... it's really nice to have less to pack up at the end of your trip... because you've eaten it all! Fresh fruit is great, too. My boys love grapes. I clean them and put them in sandwich size ziplocs for easy grab and go snacks. Do that before you leave and you spend less time working in the kitchen on your vacation.

I hope this helps! Have a great time. :)

You got some good ideas already. I'd add freeze dried fruit to the list. It might be easier for your baby to eat than regular dried fruit.

Ah, camping food for a small refrigerator. Lots of fresh fruits, no need to refrigerate for a short time. Canned corn and other canned veggies. Some fresh veggies can be kept without refrigeration for a short time, like carrots. Tuna as a meat is canned, so it keeps on the shelf. A dozen eggs doesn't take up much room, yet they can be meals themselves or be added to salads to make a salad into a meal. Applesauce is a great veggie for a supper. Don't try to cook on a grand scale, the meals are not what you went camping for. Meals should be quick and filling, so you can back to nature.

Have a great time.

We have a travel trailer so we camp often. In fact, our son was just 5 wks old the first time we took him camping!

We ignore nutrition for the weekend. We look at it as a mini-vacation. Hot dogs cooked over the camp fire, burgers on the grill, amish macaroni salad, potato chips, eggs and bacon for breakfast, etc.

Also, we don't take food with us. There is always a grocery store nearby and we find its easier to just buy the food there rather than packing and transporting it.

We go camping a lot with our kids and we usually bring pancake mix we have for breakfast or dinner, hard boiled eggs, a ham slice to grill, sometimes hamburger patties, cold cereal, cocoa, oatmeal packets. I hope you have a great trip!

Once when we went camping- I threw some frozen burrito's I had made into the cooler. It turned out to be a great idea! I had them pre-made from leftovers from a huge taco meal we had. By the time I put them on the grill they were half thawed and I brushed them with a little olive oil so they wouldn't stick. They looked great and even better, tasted awesome on the grill. You can put a Whole meal in one of those things! I now make a batch about once a month. You can load a burrito with anything, including breakfast stuff-eggs, cheese, hashbrowns and meat. OR any combination of dinner or luch fare. You just need to get the roll/fold up tight and freeze it. For camping I roll them up tight in tin foil so you can just thow the whole kabang on the fire. It's real easy to eat and not a ton of cleanup. Have fun!

Hard fruits and veggies are helpful since they can store easily. Although bananas will work. Corn, melon, apples, pears, potatoes both sweet and white are great cooked outside and easily stored. Cabbage is great for an easy salad. Hot or cold cereal and maybe a pancake mix. Nuts and dried fruit are essential if you are hiking!
Popcorn, easy to make as well. See if they supply pots and pans or not. I'd suggest layers in case it gets cool @ night, plenty of extra batteries for flashlights. Tissues always seem like a plus on a camping trip.
Have fun.
