What Do I Need to Know (Tips) About Taking Metformin?

I have asked this before, but I am finally going to start taking it today and I am a nervous wreck. I am terrified that I am going to be sick, sick, sick.

My OB said to take it with food, and that if I am one of the people who doesn't do well with it- we can talk about something else after I try it for atleast 1 month. Other than taking it with food he didn't really have any tips other than to be eating good food while I'm taking it. He also said that even though it makes some people super sick they continue to take it because it can help with weight loss. Are they nuts?!

For one week I will be taking one pill a day- I will be taking this one before bed- maybe that will help with not getting sick (I hope). After one week I have to start taking two pills a day- one in the morning and one in the evening.

** I am taking it for PCOS. Weight loss is just a perk that comes along with taking it I was told. We have also been trying to get pregnant again for 18 months.

What can I do next?

It upset my tummy, but not so bad that I couldn't take it at all. I had to start out very slowly, cutting the pill into literally fifths and taking a little at a time. I could never take an entire pill at once, but that was me. I eventually moved up to taking half a pill at once with a meal. We conceived that way within a few months! Why on earth does your doc want you to eventually be on 2 pills per day so soon? You shouldn't go up to that high of a dose unless one pill a day is not working, I would think. I would really press for some answers with regard to that dosage.

I didn't lose weight with it. But, when I started I was very thin so I didn't have anything to lose.

I recommend your idea of taking it before bedtime. That did help. And ask your doc about starting with half a pill in the beginning to help with stomach upset if you are concerned. There is no reason to rush into taking a full pill at once. Let your body get used to it.

Good luck! I was thrilled with my conception results each time I took this med, and the most I ever took was half a pill per day!

=)

I took metformin to help concieve our 2nd child ( I assume thats why your taking it since you OB prescribe it). I would say watch what you eat. Anything too sweet or greesy would mess me up. meaning you will spend time in the bathroom. But once I was use to it, it was fine. Feel free to message me if you want to talk more.
Good luck ,
K.

It might help to know what Metformin is. You look like a healthy beautiful woman, is there a reason why you need to lose weight?

I had very few problems with Metformin. My doc prescribed the extended release version. He said people experienced fewer side effects with it. I had to acclimate to it a bit, greasy foods did a number on me for a little bit, but it was short lived. My MIL had issues with the regular variety (she takes it for her diabetes). Once she switched to the extended release she no longer had any issues. Any side effects would have been worth it. After trying for our first for 2 1/2 years, we got pregnant about a month after being on it.
