What Do I Feed Him Now?

My son will be 11 months on the 26th of this month. I am in the process of weening... it is going well. However, I am such a worry wart... now that he is no longer going to have breastmilk... what do I feed him now for protein and DHA? Do I put him on formula now? If so, what do I buy.... there are so many different kinds out there, it is overwhelming. Or do I just feed him solid foods that have these sorts of nutrients and give him water to drink?

I weaned my 1st son at 10 months and he would absolutely refuse to drink formula. I called his doctor and he told me to put him on whole milk.

Hi T.,
I would give him Whole milk, organic if possible, I know it's more expensive, but i believe it's better. Start him with solids fresh vegetables, then steamed...carrots, sweet potato, green beans..or buy the frozen veggies to quickly cook. Also, try bite sized cooked chicken or turkey, depending on how well your son eats solid foods. Mashed bananas or bite sized are a good snack, gerber has some good snacks and dinners you also might want to try. Regular oatmeal (not baby oatmeal) comes in a variety of flavors, my son likes that a lot. Whatever you are making for yourself and the rest of the family may be just fine for baby if it's a little mashed or cut up. Stay away from anything too acidic like tomato based foods (sauces), oranges (juices and the fruit) I rarely give juice anyway, too much sugar that they don't need, milk and water is best. Hope this helps! Take care, V.

I would think that whole milk would be the next step but I'd check with the doctor first. But they usually switch over at a year, sometimes earlier as another poster said.

Give a quick cal to the doc just in case but I would say whole milk is fine. I think that I started at about 14 or 15 months when they stopped breastfeeding.
Unless there is any intolerance of lactose there should be no need for formula or supplements, milk is great.
Hope it helps,

I believe the next step is whole milk, you can also go to your deli and ask for shaved meats which help. If you haven't done any babyfood then I would start there first, Iron fortified cereal is where you can get your protein as well as egg yolk, cheese, and cottage cheese, peas are a good source too. I believe try your yellow veggies first, then green. This is information your doctor should've have told you to do 3 months ago.

I remember my daughter going from formula to whole milk... the doctor told me to start putting it in a sippy cup, I said "what if she doesn't drink?" she said... "when she got thirsty she would drink." I never went back to the bottle again. She is 11 soon to be 12. :)

when i felt my son was ready, we started supplenting with baby cereal, which he loved...once he was good with that (a couple/few weeks) we started with the jar baby food. i would think that whole milk would be fine, i don't think there should be any reason to put him on formula now. that's just what i'd do. when all else fails, call the doctor!

I wasn't able to breastfeed and we always did Enfamil. But the doctors say at a year babies can have regular whole cow milk. I would ask your doctor if he thinks it would be ok now. My sister started her son on cow milk at 10 months cause he was going through so much formula. My daughter is 10 months and I already feed her regular food and give her watered down juice in a sippy cup. She's very independant already(yikes!)You can also try soy milk but babies need fat for brain development so be sure that he gets a balanced variety. Avocatos are a good example of good fats and I'm sure you can find more examples on line if you do your research.
P.S. what kind of work do you do from home?

Let him experience solid foods. Make sure you cut them up in small pieces. Give the child water & some type of childrens protein drink if you don't think he's getting enough & a multi vitamin daily. TRY NOY to stress & worry mom...you'll find a way, it comes natural to us trust yourself. Good luck & God Bless!
