What Do I Do Now?

My 2yr. old daughter fractured her leg the other day. She is soo active and now all of a sudden she can't walk!! She understands that she has an "ouchie" and tells everyone "I can't walk!". The way she says it makes me want to cry for her. They put her in a full leg cast and it has to stay on for WEEKS!! How am I supposed to entertain an active two year old if she can't run around and play? I'm over 7months pregnant, so I can't do too much lifting and carrying her around. If anyone has been through a similar situation and can suggest some age appropriate activities I would SOO appreciate it!

What can I do next?

Check with her doctor/staff on how to make her mobile. Can she crawl or use a walker? Will they be giving her a walking cast? Can you get her in a stroller or wagon to go for walks around your neighborhood or the mall? Check out your local library for story times and othe activities. Go to www.Ci.Glendale.AZ.US then click on library in the top left corner.
You can get pages to color/decorate at www.kidscolorpages.com
also check out www.familyfun.com
Crafts are good, but make them short because her attention span is not that long at her age. You can glue different colored beans on color pages. One year I cut a wreath or
out of green felt. Then I bought some differnt things my daughter could glue onto it to decorate it. When she was done I glue a few popcicle/craft sticks on the back to help hold the shape and glued some yarn on top for a hanger. And now I have a treasured Christmas decoration.
Have fun.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter!! I personally haven't been in that situation, but when my children are sick, we watch movies and sing songs (it helps you too..I've been there). I found "KIDSONGS" dvd's @ Wal-mart for 1.00...my kids will watch those for hours and when one is over, they move to the next and so on. I would just try learning/teaching activites that are fun that might draw her in...hope it helps a little.

My daughters like to play with a selection of different-colored dried beans. I give them the beans, measuring cups and spoons, muffin pans etc. It keeps them busy for a while but once again is not that fun to clean up. Good Luck!

ARTS & CRAFTS!!! Give her some paper (I keep a box of tons of colorful scrap paper, but I think anything will work), glue, paints, markers (maybe...), crayons, child scissors (it will take a while, but she'll have fun trying to master them), play dough, yarn, sponges for the paint, along with anything else you can find that she can paint with, or anything else you think she might find interesting. You just have to be ok with cleaning up what could turn into a really big mess. It's totally worth it though- "right brain" activity is great!

My son is REALLY physically active also, but after I had our daughter 7 months ago (he was 2 1/2 at the time), my energy level went way down. We did a lot of art during the first couple of months. Now our house is a tribute to that time, with his work all over the walls. It's great because it's something you can do together, and once she gets more into it and comfortable with the materials, she can work independantly for a little while.

You could also try baking or cooking with her. It's fun to make goodies together, and you can enjoy them afterward. Of course quite a bit of clean up is to be expected with this activity as well.

Good luck!!
